I've been trying to model a landscape for my WW2 flight sim I'm working on. The maps will be moderately small for unrealistic low level flying (ala battlefield 1942, but landscapes will be bigger and less detailed). I bought 3D Canvas a while back but it's just really slow, fiddly and I find it very non user-friendly (the exported files also don't work with Gile[s] which I use for lightmapping). I'm also playing about with 1.6.6 of Milkshape, which is nice, but it lacks the ability to use numerical values to set sizes and position vertices. I also really need a build in UV mapper. The 3D Canvas one is poor, so I'm using unwrap 3d (the old free version), but it'd be nice to have one environment for all of this.

I don't want to go the GameSpace route and pay an arm and a leg so any suggestions. How does the newest version of milkshape shape up?

[shameless advert]I'm almost afraid to mention DeleD (i've been mentioning it a number of times this week already on these forums ) but it might just suit your needs. It's lowpoly 3D modeller with lightmapping abilities and exports to .X[/shameless advert]

I think I downloaded that a while back and had a quick look. How did the UV mapping shape up?

Well, DeleD is mainly used for level-editing and its UV functions are suitable for that purpose. Don't know which version you tried before, but right now DeleD can move/scale/flip/cylce UV coords. If you are into UV mapping more complex things like characters, DeleD might not be enough right now. We are going to build more UV functions, like manipulation of individual UV coordinates. Will be a while though. Anyway, latest version is 0.914.

I think the version I tried was about 6 months ago when it was first being hyped up. I think the lightmapping was just "on the cards" at that point. I think I'll have another look then. What file types does it export btw?

DeleD supports exporting to X and B3D and importing OBJ, 3DS and B3D. DBO is planned also. Anyway, check www.delgine.com for more info.

I second the recommendation for Blender. You can find more information at www.blender3d.com.

It's really a solid program and it also has lots of features.

i totally third the recommendation of blender. I have never used something so small and powerful. It really is a delight to use, and it can do anything from lowpoly to highpoly film stuff - Its great.

you can position a vertice by selecting it then going into Vertex>>Manual Edit (or Ctrl+Shift+E)
make sure you check the "show only selected" box

and if(trust me it's hard) you can get used to blender's UI, then i'd say go for it

I looked at Blender a while ago, and it just looked hard to use. Well maybe the interface was not friendly enough for me to put the time into it.

Milkshape is a great modeler for the price.
Nothing can come close to Animation Master can for doing organics for it's price, and maybe even rival the high end packages. I have used it to make terrain for a corporate project.

I have used 3ds Max daily for years.

I may be switching to Cinema 4D. Version 9 is really impressive. The modeler beats 3ds Max, and it's Texture painting is astounding.

I have never even heard of DeleD but it looks like a nice package. Being free I may DL it to test it out.

The UV mapping is by far the most important thing for me, so I'll check out DeleD again and see how it goes. Maya and 3DS max are both to complex for me for the simple task of low poly modelling and have too much overhead because of their complexity.

Current thoughts are Milkshape with Ultimate Unwrap 3D, but I'll give DeleD a go before I part with my cash.

Ok, cool. Just remember that DeleD is mainly suitable for level-creation. If you want to UV-map characters (or other types of more complex 3D models), DeleD might not suit your needs (don't want expectations to be too high, just being honoust about what DeleD can and cannot do right now ). Anyway, cu around the Delgine site then!
