Ok as the release of FPSC gains ever closer (hopefully! lol), i'm starting to develop ideas.

I very much like the fact that FPSC allows you to add your own models, HOWEVER i have NEVER modelled before so i thought it was about time i learnt (on a basic level at least) instead of relying on others.

So, what free (yes im mucho poor at the mo) modelling program should i start with that is compatible with fpsc? It has to be easy to learn and use.

Cheers

I would say that wings3D would be good
i use it myself(The models you make can be used in commercial products too wihtout you need to pay for a license )

Its free and can be downloaded here:

Hope that helped

OK, cheers guys.

What about texturing? Is there a tool that lets you literally paint onto your created object?

As i never could get the hang of the texture files in T3DGM!?!

There actualy is a tool that lets you paint onto your
created objects. But it is a horrible tool that gives
realy bad results.. I would recommend that u use
Milkshape for texturing as well.
in this thread

i posted a link to some tutorial videos for milkshape.
There is a video there on how to skin a gun. (in Milkshape)

Cartography Shop has some rudimentary controls for texturing. They aren't the greatest in the world, but if you very little skill (like I do) you will find that you can make basic shapes and texture them directly in the program.

I've tried every suggested program on these forums and for me Cartography Shop was by far the easiest to use... it's also has the least amount of features - it's very restrictive. But if you want something that you can drag and click it will do the job.

Be sure to download the demo from TGC because it's very pricey for what it can do

You could also try Bryce or Poser, but to be honest they produce high poly models and I think it would be a real bear to convert your creations from thier native formats (I think you can export as .obj files) to .x files and who knows if textures will get lost, screwed up (inverted) etc. etc.

I feel your pain for finding a 3D program that has a simple to use GUI. (so sue me I LIKE playing with legos!)

I was also looking for a simple tool and i have tried most of them.
Now if you look into all those videos.. Like the basics videos you will learn how to use Milkshape. With just a little bit of hardwork
and some time you will make awesome models..
Nothing is really easy. You just have to put your mind to it. If you just settle for some halfassed product with no features just because its easy you will never make good models. (or even avarage ones)
And by halfassed product i do not mean "Cartography Shop" (Pogopogo)
I started with milkshape, trust me its easy and its a good intro to more advanced tools. (I use lightwave now)

Heh you won't offend me with that statement... I have some choice things I could say about Cartography Shop. Easy to use comes with a price (both figuratively and literaly)

I attached an image to this message. It's some kind of generator/engine thingy I was working on last night. It's not finished (I spent about 4 hours on it - mostly just moving textures around and trying to line them up!?!)

Basically I was trying a proof in concept last night just to assure myself that I could create intersting objects by using only primitives in the right ocmbination and with the right textures.

(disclaimer - I did not design the base textures they were purchased from a texture CD I got a while ago - though I am modifying them a bit)

Sadly I have no idea of how to scale this item properly to fit into FPSC just yet

pogopogo i wrote that because i did not want to offend you.
I actaully ment other products that actually are halfassed.
I think Cartography shop is a good product.

PogoPogo,

Nice screen shot......very wise of you to get going doing something constructive and keep ahead of us all.

Getting the textures right - especially on export and import though various file formats and progs can be a pain.

Hopefully they will import with the textures fine into FPSC for you.

.x file is a great file format though sometimes there can be inconsistencies in the various progs interpretations of the file format as you probably know. I just love that kind of file format where all the information is embedded in the object.

cool trashcan (in england we call it a rubbish bin )
its a little "cell-shaded" though. after looking at the other media in fpsc i dont think it would fit in. It needs the outlines removed. It looks great tho!

It is not cellshaded.
I dont realy care if it fits in.
For the general publick it is a free model
and i wont use the models supplied with FPSC
i will only use my own models and they fit with
each others.

For 'painting' straight onto models, 3DS Max has the VertexPaint modifier.

But then again, 3DS Max has everything. That's why it's price in the thousands region.

I think you cant paint straight onto your model in MeDle or Qme
or some other one of those old quake modelers..

Well it seems that i've got the hang of texturing in milkshape now anyways, so i stick with that for now.

I do posess a copy of 3DS Max 5 somewhere, so when i get better i might just break that out!

When i got better i broke out Lightwave. It was REAL easy.
Actually i find it easier to model in lightwave then in Milkshape
and Milkshape is REAL easy.

Btw: The trashcan model i posted a video of earlier, keep in mind
that it is realy LOW poly. I think its like 140 polys.

Doesn't milkshape cost $50? I got blender, should I use
something else or something better? I am a noob to moddelling in case you didn't know so I want to try and get something kinda easy to use. I have been using blender for a few weeks and I kind of have the hang of it. I am totally clueless about the amount of polys I shound have, how to texture, and all of that stuff.

So should I use Milkshape or somethimg else?

thanks a lot

Well i've just started (literally today! lol) and i'm finding it quite rewarding.

I've done another model, which again i'll aim to use in my first FPSC project (well maybe) anyways here it is, again remember how new to this i am!

Edit> Sorry this pic is a .bmp so you'll have to download!

@nvc450
Looking good.
@ MaddA ChieF
i would recomend Milkshape.
There is a trial version on their homepage so you can
test before you buy. And $50 is cheap for such a good
modeling application. Considering what 3ds and lightwave cost

Cheers Noldor, i would also recommend Milkshape, once you get your head around it, you really can get some results, the two models i made that i posted pics of, took me 2hours to make, which included teaching myself how to use the program!

Give it a go, i still have much to learn but am now in high spirits about doing so. I have proven to myself that i can indeed model (if only at a basic standard).

Infact i'm in such i high spirits i think i may start work on a model package, of course it will be available to you guys at no cost, thats of course if you don't mind some noobish models!

You can join mine and Evarcha's model package. =)

BTW. Good point. Dont be afraid of trying to model.
Follow nvc450's example and dare to try before you
discharge it as being Quantum physics.

ERm i'm crap with keeping to deadlines, plus i have a hella load of college work. So i will jus be making models from time to time, wen i actually have time, so i think i'll jus release my own (thats not definate!), thankyou anyway it's very nice to be asked.

Anyways jus had an idea for my first game, when you pick this item up (which is optional, to give an idea of freedom!) the background music changes! I hope this is possible!

I think its good enough. We dont realy keep track of each others work. We will just smack everything together into one pack when
we feel we are done. (i will host the zip file)
Then if people dont like some models then its their choice
not to use them.
