Hi all,

I just wanted to take the oppertunaty to warn you all of a virus that has been repidly spreading throughout today via MSN Messenger.
The virus comes in the form of PIF files.

So if any of your contacts sends you an odd looking file, i'd be a good idea to decline.

My anti-virus program would deal with it automatically anyway...

Well, it's only recent. Thought it might be worth mentioning it, just incase.
Also, since i'll appear to be coming from a friend, you might see it to be safe.

I was about to post a thread about this

I got it from my friend, who often sends random, safe files so I accepted

Spybot found 5 DSO exploits (and stopped a load when I got the files) and Norton and Adaware should find and kill it hopefully. TCA what's your anti-virus program?

As people with me in their contact list I have a warning in my name to stop people accepting transfers for their own safety

Its Squidgy actually... Anyhoo, my AV program is Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005. I haven't decided whether to renew the subscription or not when it runs out in June. If not, I may go with the one Rich suggested a month or so again.

Trend AV is very good mind - its got a firewall, AV, wireless detection, scans for missing Microsoft Updates, and you can remotely update computers. Updates are done pratically everyday.

Pff TCA is easier to remember than STB

Also STB sounds like STD

How much does it cost? Seeming as my Dad pays for my virus protection I might as well get something like that? Also what's the memory footprint like compared to Norton?

How about just calling him Herpes?
Please, don't track me down and eat me Squidgy.

Doesn't, um, the little Windows Update notifier do the same thing? Hehehe.

Yes, but then you need either automatic updates on or remember to do it yourself.

It costs £40 on line.

the virus is a green blob with red spots on.

Part of solving the problem is actually noticing that the problem is there in the first place

With the exception to the fact that I'm not an actor in Neighbours, its good to see that you have done something right

AliM,
I can't quite explain in any more detail than I have already.

It spreads via the MSN file transfer system,
Sends to contacts on your contact list,
Appears to come from your contacts.
Shows as a .pif / similar executable file

They have neighbors in the UK? Dang, either way I don't like the show.

Back on subject: Does the virus send itself to other members or do your contacts have to send them manually?

It sends the virus automatically, without you knowing about it.

My sister just happened to have accepted it from one of her friends.

I managed to delete the virus, webcam.pif off, didnt have the other one mentioned.

If you accept a file from someone you don't recognize, you deserve a virus! 99% of virii are easily avoided if you use common sense. The other 1% is due to MS security holes and Time Warner letting things in like Code Red.

Good thing I've got a small people list, and only talk to two of them.
