Can I alter the UVs or the mesh? There is some stuff I would like to change optimize.

I brought it down to 872 polygons losslessly (thats a fun word). When I finish the updated UV layout I will post it so everyone can use it. I might go back in and add some details with those extra triangles.

I will make sure the final polycount doesn't exceed 936 triangles (the original count)

To be honest, The comp is about skinning the supplied model/UV's...Its not an optimizing and tweaking UV's comp so your work will not help your chances of winning or anybody elses...

The idea after the comp was over was to provide a zip with one model and 10-20 skins for 3d programmers to use for FREE...

Good Luck anyway Alec!!

Interesting, although I find the idea of using a JPG image for a mechanical device to be utterly repulsive. Any chance of having a version that uses PNG, TGA, or BMP for the image texture?

Just use a PNG and post a screengrab from your 3D App not the viewer, TGA and BMP will be a little too big for posting the skin...
