[/i]Inspector McCrane pressed a weary hand to his brow and interrupted the constable, “All right, I realize that you have done everything by the book. Now, If we could get on to the pertinent facts?”
The constable gave a quick jerky nod and handed him a piece of paper.
“Here’s the alleged suicide note sir.”
McCrane took the paper and read out loud, “To those whom it concerns: I have finally decided that life is not worth the effort. I am sorry for the mess this may cause, but I am really tired of this futile rat race. I sorrow to leave you, dear Mary, and to leave my book unfinished, but as the Bard says, ‘Parting is such a sweet sorrow.’ sorrowfully, Henry Plogger.”
McCrane looked at the constable. “And this was found where?”
“On the table sir, on the top of the manuscript mentioned in the book, “Why Bacon deserves Shakspeare’s Credit.”
“And this ‘Mary’? What of her?”
“She’s his wife, and co heir of his $500,00 estate. The other heir is Sir Tobias Plogger. It’s a pretty straightforward suicide sir. Various friends have testified that he had been drinking to much, and getting more and more depressed. Sir Tobias even says he asked him the cleanest way to kill oneself. The body was found lying on the sofa, holding a glass which contains traces of arsenic. The only fingerprints on the glass are the late Sir Henry’s, and the door was locked. The clues Sir all lead to suicide.”
“All the clues but one, you mean constable.”
