i have been trying to learn it for about 3 days but i dont know if it is worth it to still try to learn it or if i should go back to qwerty so i wanted to know if any one uses it and if it really improved their typing speeds.

I once tried to log into these forums at Charles de Gaulle - could never find the @ key. Had to give up

Eh? Why would the @ key be missing?

Apparently the dvorak keyboard is easier to use when you know it--- you can type faster than using the QWERTY keyboard.

It was above one of the number keys, yet I couldn't find the key to activate it. Presing shift gave you another symbol. I later found out you had to press Alt Gr.

apparently your speed will be equal to the qwerty board after about a month.

Don't expect high speeds in a week

After that month, you'll continue to go faster and faster, whereas on the qwerty, as most of ya know, your speed doesn't increase much more after a while

I switched back to qwerty about an hour ago. I know i can type faster if i practice enough using the dvorak keyboard but when typing something important like homework for school or anything, it is just takes too long to type anything. Maybe i will try dvorak again during the summer when i dont have school so i dont have to worry about typing anything important. And during the summer i will have more time to try to learn how to type on the dvorak keyboard better too.

uhh..just use dvorak when you don't have to learn large papers...

no one says you have to keep to dvorak and not switch back and forth

Actually, it doesn't make much sense to use two keyboards at once. Typing fast is subconcious and you can't really learn or, I believe, even effectively use one once you've learned the other. I know someone who switched to Dvorak and was quite fast typing on it, but was slow as crap with Qwertys after that.

wish someone would invent some kind of mobile phone keyboard. can type really fast with predictive text on, also leaves one hand free for something else.

Qwerty might not be optimal, but become a master on dvorak now, and when everyone else has had years of using qwerty, you go for a job, and you look like a 2 day old novice. Especially if you have to do an entry test on a computer. Nice. Where is the "O" key again? Someone I employed actually asked me that once. He had a computer science degree for f**ks sake....

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

to see a photo of the dvorak keyboard go to images.google.com and search dvorak keyboard. And its the same keyboard, I just popped the keys out and rearranged them to the dvorak layout and in control panel i set it so windows recognizes it as a dvorak keyboard and not a qwerty keyboard.

That sounds time-consuming.

Whys it called dvorak? I can understand "qwerty" because all those letters line up. But on a dvorak keyboard, the d and the v are miles apart.

It's named after Professor August Dvorak, who came up with the layout in the 1930s, if www.atarimagazines.com is to be beleived.

Why, supposidly, will you continue to get faster using a dvorak keyboard? Once you learn the keybaord you've learnt it, right? Just like qwerty?

A long time ago when people used type writers, qwerty was designed so that the typewriters don't jam. And because people was so used to using a qwerty keyboard on there typewriters thats what people used when they started using computers.

qwerty was designed so type writers wont jam and dvorak was designed to allow u to type faster and more accurate.

You can type faster on a dvorak because all the vowels and letter u use most often are all on the middle row so your fingers don't have to travel as far to type most common words.

You know typewriter is the longest word you can type using just the top row of letter keys on a qwerty keyboard.

Actually, I'm seriously considering switching over to Dvorak. You also get the added security benefit that anyone else who tries to use your computer will be completely confused. I read that the reason "typewriter" is all on the top row is so that the typewriter salesmen wouldn't have to hunt and peck.

I wand that dvorak keyboard! if you know how to type with it, you should see ~300% speed increase.
