Get the dbPowerAMP Music Converter - http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ It can handle .midi along with some other obscure midi formats. Mp3 converter only works for a month unless you regester it, but dbPowerAMP IMHO is the best music player/converter out there, so it's a good buy

what i really want is any software (converter, creator, editor etc...) that is FREE, DOWNLOADABLE and has no restrictions (i.e. 30 day trials etc...) that can make the sound quality really good - real like pianos instead of midi sounds, real like synths istead of midi stuff.

For when they said I couldn't, I did...

You'll never find something with realistic piano sounds for free

Oh yes you will - get ModTracker ([href]www.modplug.com/[/href]) Then download some of the .IT songs hosted on the site and use the samples from that.

Say you want a piano instrument - go to http://www.vinceyoung.com/novusmusic/novus.html and d/l Beacon, Words, and Luciet Intentions (or however you spell it ) All of those have great samples (including high/low piano). For metal tracks, go back to modplug.com and do a search for "The Black Mask" (song title) by AlienmaN. Asesome guitar samples and a kick-arse drumkit are all there

Of course, it's not exactly free, as you still need to credit the people you rip samples from (for the most part - if you convert to mp3 you generally don't need to worry unless it's either a very destinctive sample or you think someone might recconize it *inhales deeply*

You also have realistic sounding piano sounds right on your wavetable sound card. If you have any soundblaster from the earliest series live onwards, it's wavetable, and it has real digitised sound samples on it. The painos are probably the best sampled instruments on a decent sound blaster. So long as you use them properly with correct velocity variation and sustain, they sound very real.

One thing that put me off Fruity Loops was the way it just didn't shut up. You play something and it would carry on echo-ing or reverberating on into the night. I havn't figured out how to controll samples but I make some real random songs from it. It's like putting some music to a young guy who works in a loud metal beating factory that goes on his lunch to sit on the toilet. Then dances to club music pathetic and has a sandwich while thinking about lyrics from radiohead/soundgarden songs.

I like it. Easy. Click your mouse on square 1 pattern 1 for a red cube. click SS in the top menu. and place some beats down. the browser on the side also has cool sounds. all the rest you gotta figure out

If you're nmot wanting to do anything orchestral then Fruity Loops is all you need. The download time is worth it. You can listen to our poopy songs then once the download's done listen to the songs that come with the demo...unfrickin believable. You can fix the reverb problem by adjusting the FL Slayer settings, and using the piano roll instead of step sequencing on most of the instruments.

Songs:
http://mrbobdouglas.com/~crazydon/Rocka_du_Electronica.mp3
http://mrbobdouglas.com/~crazydon/diemontehouse.mp3 - This one is real insteresting, because my friend was messing around on this, and instead of setting all the drum hits in one pattern he spread them out over several patterns and made it sound like he had three or four whole different drum patterns when he just put together combinations of the few licks he already had.
http://mrbobdouglas.com/~crazydon/rockanthem.mp3
http://mrbobdouglas.com/~crazydon/pumpin.mp3

I tried Anvil Studio once, played around with it, and found it just too much of a pain in the butt to use. That's when I found fruity loops.

Sweet dude. Since we were making an FPS before we wanted some hard rockin stuff in there.
Y'know what's fun is to use jazz progressions in these rock tunes.

Try using thisI being the root chord, etc.)
I-I-I-I
IV-IV-I-I
V-IV-I-I

So if you started with A it would be:
A A A A
D D A A
E D A A

Then fill in melody lines and all that, even if you deviate from it for art's sake it's still a nice place to start from.

Holy son-of-a-manwich, calm down. I tried Music Maker....and it isn't all that great - the $50 version of FL Studio does more than Music Maker 2005 does. You're better off paying money for something from Sony or Cakewalk.

First figure out a prevalent theme or background rythm. Write that into the score, then if you're planning on using any large amout of percussion in the song throw in some initial drum rythms or cymbal crashes at this point. Next you need to put in variations of the melody, background chords, and more percussion.

If you're just doing a small combo type of arrangement you only need to add instruments as needed, but if you're writing for a fixed type of group like an orchestra or band then it's nice to start with a template.

I Highly suggest SoundForge or Adobe audition for your sound needs.
If your are looking at something like Sound FX then try buing from places that sell digital audio equpitment, ask them for any thing that has SFX's on a disk.
I have one a library of over 1 million of SFXs on CD-ROM.

P.S. My dad is a p.a. system operator and has been running sound systems for over 40 years! So I know my stuff.

WOAH!!! I took Fallout's suggestion about Psycle tracker (or however you spell it ) I downloaded it about 15 minutes ago, went "OMG TEH BUTTONS!!!!11" Man that's seriously complicated to somebody who's used to using ModTracker. After messing around for a few minutes without even getting it to say "c-5" on the screen I gave up and poked around on the Psycle site for some sample songs. D/l "travel through time" and my jaw just dropped. I've NEVER heard such awesomest effects (reverb, pads, static blasts) in meh LIFE :o

Now I just finished listening to it.. still don't know how to work it.. but am seriously motivated now

EDIT: mp3 version here - http://www.track3z.net/artist/MfM/travelthroughtime.mp3

Thanks for the tips, guys I downloaded Skale and Psycle trackers and will try them both out. I've been looking for a reason (no pun intended) to stop using Reason.

I tried the demo of Reason...so confusing. My first choice would be Sonar 4. You can use the demo of FL Studio in it as a Rewire client, probably not legal, but I was planning on forking out the money for FL anyway.

Ah well d/l-ing skale now Will have to see which one is more intutive to use, I guess.

Hmmm, appears my reaction to Psycle was a, uhm, little over the top It has cool reverb and echo generators, but everything else relies totaly on VST plugins. Which means my massive sample libary is of no use

Skale appears to be the one for me--cool looking interface, even if it is a little condensed. Only problem is, I still have five songs written in ModTracker that I haven't finished And I can't work on them in Skale either--no import feature. Which means I'm... confused. Maybe I'll just go stick my head in a foutain of spring water

or something...
