http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/10/bt_bb_giveaway/

Those on BT Broadband (like me) currently on 512kb will be upgraded to 2mb for free from 17th Feb. Can't wait!

Those on the cutdown BT Broadband Basic will be upped to 1MB.

Looks like BT are scared of losing customers to me.

Should have gone for Nildram. I've had 2Mb ADSL for over a year now...

Yeah, NTL are doing the same "first quarter 2005". 300 goes to 1mb (about £17 per month?), 750 goes to 2mb (£25 a month), and theres a 3mb for £37 a month.

Although apparently by april there should be some exchanges that go to 8mb (there are 4mb around now, just in rare places - eg. centre of London). The end of the year should have hundreds of exchanges at 8mb apparently. And ADSL2 apparently, once they finally stop testing it out.

Still bloody slow and mega pricey compared to the rest of the developed world though. Seems broadband is another unknown example like petrol (on average it apparently costs less per barrel to bring petrol to the pumps in the UK than in the US, but check out the final price difference - megatax).

Cheers

Most exchanges outside London wont have the 4Mb to 8Mb ADSL until much later in the year, or possibly next, which is annoying.

Yep, that's pretty much the reason why NTL is doing what they are doing. And apart from completely *f**king* useless phone support (imagine I screamed that extremely loudly for about an hour over and over, and you will imagine about 10% of how much I hate their support), I would recommend NTL.

And I would use Telewest, as they always seem slightly better one way or another than NTL, plus one or two steps ahead, pretty much all the time. But no choice where I live. I was signed up with BT since the first day they offered advanced sign up. A year later they phoned to say they were ready for the first ADSL rollouts, and ask my post code. I had already put this in the original registration. Nope says the engineer, too far from the exchange. Try again in a year. Arrrrrrgggg!!!! Then I got NTL cable installed a week later. And NTL is the only cable supplier in the area. Annoying, but has been fine apart from the support (arrrrrhhhhhhhh!!!!).

And yeah, we are pretty much the backwater yeehaws of the broadband world (for some unknown reason) in the UK. B**tards...

Cheers

Are all the broadband companies going to do this? I'm served by Orbital (quite a major company) and I would love 2Mb *dreams of it*

I dont think so... You could always try Nildram.
Now that more ISP's are doing 2Mb ADSL, hopefully they'll lower the price...

Yup. I signed up to 512K about 2 years ago, I'm now on 1 meg at no extra charge (2 upgrades). Hopefully Telewest will match BT and others, and go to 2 Meg.

Japan - entry level broadband is 28 Meg

BT still haven't got their act together yet - they're going to convert our 'exchange' in around June.... Bastards...

Yep, I'm on dialup, but that doesn't stop me from running Apache web server & playing UT2003 online

Sigh. Yep, tis weird how broadband has been so slow to increase in this country. Methinks is some conspiracy effort between all the suppliers to maximise profits. Sure, one of them edges ahead here and there, but it's never by that much. One of those annoying things that only seem to happen in the UK (when it comes to extremely well off countries). Bit like TV licencing. Does anyone else in the world actually do such a thing?

Don´t worry guys. Here in Spain we´re even worse than you guys are. 1 meg costs you 38€. They say that they´ll increase the speed again next month though. I´ll probably end up on 8mbit download and 128kb upload. This is a joke...

Are you guys sure BT is upgrading to 2MB? I've seen no mention of it in my inbox or my homepage (I have BT Yahoo 512kb).

must be nice to even be able to GET broadband. we only had cable made available in our neighborhood a few months ago. we still can't get DSL here.

then again, most of america isn't a bustling metropolis like, from what i understand, a good part of europe is. there are a lot of trees and very little broadband..

Killswitch,

Yes I am sure. It's been posted everywhere. Even on BT's home page there is link to this which explains how and when the change will happen. Looks like it is phased over 5 months. Shame. Hope I'm near top of list!

Yeah, we normally forget that in the UK. From all the TV we get from the US, you will have to forgive us for thinking everywhere has the technology that cities do. In the UK pretty much everyone has access to broadband if they want it. Have heard of remote scottish islands, and weird valleys with 2 houses miles for anywhere that can't get broadband, but thats about it. Helps when you have 60 odd million people squished into a teeny space (the coast is never more than a couple of hours away for example). For example, I heard once that Wales (ok, so is a small country compared to England, but England must only be 4 times larger or so - guessing) was about the same size as New York's national park. Nice. Ironically theres bugger all people in Wales (I grew up there, and they got broadband last year apparently - I share your pain).

Cheers

I work for a Swedish company based in Stockholm (Danderyd). The strange thing is, they all tend to work most of the time in the office, whereas here in the UK we work frequently from home, on slower lines.

My IT teacher in school says that all the companies buy their bandwith from BT (Eclipse in Exeter has 1 gbit/s) and sell the amounts like 512kbps off to customers. Apparently, here in good old Exeter you could get 1 gbit/s over gbit lan with fibre optic cables if you paid eclipse £10,000 a month. Not sure if blueyonder use bt for their bandwith, but blueyonder is certainly reliable (me has 256kbps, damn blueyonder people will be upgrading all speeds except mine why?)

Hopefully as more and more local loops and exchanges are made availiable to other ISP's apart from BT, it should improve.

No, Blueyonder is "proper" broadband over fibre optic cable. BT is over standard copper, telephone cable and prone to more errors. Last time I looked, copper cable was averaging 20% more drop-out than fibre optic.

Having said that, you are only as strong as the weakest link, which is the copper wire in your house. But at least it's only a short distance.

There's no such thing as mbps, as you can't send part of a bit. It's a digital thing you know.

PiratSS, technically he's right. A small "m", as opposed to a capital "M", is milli. So that makes it a 1000th of a bit, thus 1000 mbps being 1 bps.
In practise, there is no such thing as mbps, as you can't split a bit, it's the lowest common denominator.
