I'd never heard of DDS until yesterday and I was curious as to why on earth FPSC was using what i would regard as a widely unsupported format for it's endeavors - instead of BMP's or JPG's.

Then I found a page with a few little niknaks for seemingly all your DDS needs.

Although here's a question for you webcrawlers and dataminers out there.

Is there a QuickView style windows application that supports the .x file format in existance and if so where is it?

Because it's the native (read fastest, most suitable) file format for DirectX applications. DDS viewers/convertors are free in the DirectX SDK or via 3rd party apps like XNView.

If you are not comfortable using DDS, use TGA files for your custom imported graphics. It is the next best for holding alpha, and it is what I used throughout development (and continue to use) because it retains all the quality work Simon, the artist, has done. Most art packages, if not all, support TGA these days.

DDS is really a final texture format, like you'd use whatever your used to, then when your done with your texture you make a .DDS version. DDS format textures load quicker and take up less graphics memory as they stay compressed - I like the Photoshop plugin (also works with PSP6+) from the nVidia website, it's nice to have direct support for it in PS. Anyone wanting to keep their game uploads as small as possible will grow to love DDS files .
