I am just starting to look at 3D games, and I need some advice. I want to do the following:
Make a model
Skin it (is that unwrapping it?)
Export it in a format useable for DBP

How can I do this (with what programs) for the smallest outlay of money possible? I am NOT looking to do very high-end modelling.

milkshape is worth a look for the modelling and exporting, and lithunwrap for the uv wrapping (skining)

there is always blender - which is free, but you might not like the interface - it's a tad cluttered imo

Do you do the unwrapping (I assume that is setting how an image file wraps around the model) in lithunwrap?

Is it possible to use gmax instead of milkshape?

yep skinning is in lithunwrap, what it does is lay the model out in 2d so that you can put an image on it

don't use gmax - if you read the eula it says that you can't sell anything you make, which is a pain, and the fact that it is difficult to export to the .x format or .3ds format, as gmax is made to modify games not make them

Well, I'm not worried about selling stuff, I don't believe in it. Thanks for the help.

Ian - how about if you build the basic shapes in gmax then tweak in Milkshape?

i'd say start a grid of 6x6 and then shaping it to the way you want it to look then extrude outwards to make it 3d (blender does this very easily).
