Just a little unsure on the technology used to create this film's realistic yet cartoony effect. Please check out the trailer here and give me your input.

I've seen a couple of Japanese animated movies in my time but none have been as fluid as this (if it's even Japanese anime!). Anyways, as per technology it looks to me like they shot this like any other regular movie and did some serious photoshop editing on each frame of the shoot 'cus to draw something as fluid as that would take some "out of this world" talent.

I initially thought it used the same technology as Appleseed called "3D live Anime" where i guess real actors put on the mocap outfits and act while the film crew record the digital actors on-screen but i could tell Appleseed was 3D... with this film i can't. What do you think?

Looks interesting, I'll probably go and see it when it's released, like the mix of animation and actual screenplay.

It's probably either drawn over or simplified and processed (like cartoon shading in realtime is).

Still, I don't think it works too well. In the close up scenes it's a great effect, but the further the actors are from the camera, the more normal they look, which is pretty weird.

The dialogue is also pretty goofy-- maybe it's just the trailer

Philip K. Dick rules. And I believe the less detail the further from the camera was intentional.

I meant more detail-- it's like they become less cartoon-like, because details are equally preserved at close and distant range. It's the opposite of how 'real animation' works, which is why it's so weird in the enviornment. Rewatch the trailer and I think you'll catch it .

Yes, Philip K Dick does rule

Maybe my eyes are just screwy but some close-up scenes, in particular the near-end one with Winona Ryder seem more lifelike than the faraway ones. The worst though is when they're talking to Keanu Reeves about his brain and it's showing the camera from the Dr.'s perspective.
