I finally completed the game! Did it in DarkBasic Classic too!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Last Half of Darkness: Shadows of the Servants

San Diego, CA - February 21st. - WRF Studios today releases a new PC adventure for Windows®.

Dr. Muretta has died and left behind a secret she has taken to her grave. A secret that her daughter cannot live without!

A dark spirit, spawned through the death of a cursed monkey, has governed the deserted New Orleans estate of the late Dr. Muretta and her family for over fifty years. The ancient voices of the black world exist here among the ashes of the dead, where a new story is born, and the graves of a thousand monkeys set the eerie backdrop for a terrifying exploration into terror.

The latest installment to "The Last Half of Darkness" story, the new title offers a spine-tingling story of terror, mysterious puzzles and bizarre imagery. Summoned to a world of voodoo and black magic, the player must explore a creepy New Orleans estate and local town to solve the riddles of the darkness left behind.

Last Half of Darkness: Shadows of the Servants is developed by WRF Studios. Visit http://www.lasthalfofdarkness.com/newlasthalf.htm to preview the trailer, download a small playable demo, view screen-shots, or read more information.

Thanks - I hope everyone enjoys the game!

Thanks Hawkeye - but because the game is extremely large it is only sold on CD-ROM and the demo (about 30MB) only shows a glimpse of the full game. There are two demos, but the newest demo is located here:

Thanks Chenak for taking a look. Were you able to move around at all? Did you open the closet door? or did it crash only when leaving the room. Did the old demo you played before work ok - did it show you moving upstairs ok?

Yer it only crashed when i tried to leave the room, everything else was fine. I know its only a one room demo but imo it should come up with a splash screen with " go to so and so to buy this game" then head back to the main menu instead of crashing with a runtime error

The old demo worked great, and yes it showed the moving up the stairs animation if i remember correctly

Chenak: I re-uploaded a new version of the demo (with the necessary codec) This may solve the problem. Im not sure why it crashes for you - most computers it works fine. Its something with the video avi files. The demo actually does have a splash screen at end. For some reason it seems to crash on your computer when ONE of the animation avi files plays. It sounds like you could open the closet and move around the room. (other animations worked fine huh?) Thanks again for trying it out.

Peter: Thanks for trying it out - I guess it worked ok for you huh? no crashes?

I remember playing the original demo in the WIP forum, downloading now, will edit once I've tried it.

[edit]
It's pretty much the same demo as before, what I'd like to see is a gameplay demo that shows about the first hour of gameplay (since you're claming there's well over 20 hours in the full game, this won't give people too much of the game).

The problem with using pre-rendered stuff in the game is there's no real limit to how much detail you can put it apart from your time and the ram in your system, the final footage will take up the same data space regardless of whether there's 40,000 polys on screen or 40,000,000.

On the whole, looks good and promising, however I think games like this are a little limited in their market today.

One question: since you're only selling it on cd, just how much data does the full game take up?

I don't suffer from insanity:

I enjoy every minute of it!

Thanks Avan for taking a look!. Yes the demo on the site is exactly the same. However, there is another demo too (see 3rd post from top) - maybe this is the one you're talking about anyway.

Yes. It is a niche market.

The game barely fits on 1 cd compressed - uncompressed its about a Gig

Thanks

loosk cool, downloading the video now, but you may wnna rephrase this line
Quote: "Dr. Muretta has died and left behind a secret she has taken to her grave."
if she left it behind, she didn't take it to her grave. but hey, demonic monkey spirits!!! that sounds almost as awesome as transformers crossed with gi-joe!

Uberwiggett - I think that might be deliberately worded that way, suggestion she left clues to something that's literally in her grave!

Billy777 - I tried the second demo and it's pretty good. The only shame is, I don't buy things online.

billy777 - I played the demo and watched the trailer - looks amazing! I might be ordering it when I get paid. Seriously though, if you can make ME order something over the net, you know you've done a heck of a good job making me interested. Kudos to you!

[EDIT]: Did I just read you did this in DarkBASIC CLASSIC!? That's brilliant!

Are you kidding? There's 3 or 4 click adventure games sitting in my local gamestop as I type this message, they have their own niche.

The graphics were gorgous.. a bit lengthy on the loading between different rooms, but bareable I suppose..

I'd buy it if the demo was a bit more involving, and if I were really into the click and plays.. I've played a few, and this one was as stunning as one should expect from a click adventure.

Today I won't buy it, but catch me on a day when I really want to play a click adventure ya might see an order placed

(also I'd change the default icon, looks a bit unprofessional, with such great graphics inside, and the standard gradiant for the icon)

How many games like this have been release recently? None as far as I know.

Lucas Arts cancelled Sam & Max 2 and Full Throttle 2 last year even though both games were within 8 months of completion, mainly because they thought neither would sell very well. Gitts.

I get a runtime error 10 when I try the demo. People say you have
pre-rendered background. How did you do that? Graphics look great!
But I still would like to play demo. Yes I (in middle of doing my
game)would like to get yours but first, must see demo. Yes I have all
requirements.

there's the csi game, there's some sherlock holmes game, and there was another which I can't remember..

And those are the ones sitting at a small game store, can just imagine what's out there at some larger software stores.

I'm ordering it tommorow, and I was so excited I HAD to post! It looks so amazing! I know I already posted, but I haven't seen a game like this in so long, it's fantastic! BTW, what are the 'extra games' included with the game?

[EDIT]: I was wondering, the demos (1 and 2) appear to be excatly the same. Am I only accessing 1 of the 2? Or are they the same? By the way. if they are different, the one I'm going into starts off in the room with the book, the lamp and the closet thing with the skeleton inside.

Thans for the feedback dugzilla, Jiffy and Jeku!

Hope you enjoy the game Jiffy... as far as the demo goes... Initially I had 2 demos but decided to go with only one (the one where you start in the room)

Just played the game and it takes me back to the good old days of multimedia adventuring... right when CD-ROMs first came out in the early 90's This is incredible, and I disagree with the poster who said pre-rendered scenes are a "problem". I think they're great and I'd love to see a longer demo!

I would have edited my above post but thought it may be of importance so I am creating a new post.

billy777 - I ordered LHOD two days ago, and everything seemed to be in order. But, when the transaction finished, it said I would receive an e-mail receipt. However, I haven't gotton one yet. I wasn't sure if I was meant to get it yet or not, but I thought I should post.

Jeku: Thanks for the comment. Yes I need to make a longer demo. (But I also want to keep it small)

Jiffy: Everythings probably ok but I can check on your order if you like - email me directly with your information (email address is on order page)

Thanks

I know I've posted numerous time about how great this game is, and I know this thread keeps getting bumped, but I have to say that I just finished it and it was brilliant! You are an amazing game creator, billy777!

[EDIT] billy777, are you entering 'Jewels of the Black Widow' into the puzzle game competition? I'm downloading it now and it looks great! [/EDIT]

[EDIT] *SEMI-SPOILERS*

Actually, while I'm here, I wanted to tell you that I had two save files, and the first one i got to the part beneath the house where you read the book in the furnace. But once I went into it, it wouldnt let me get out of it. I tried again and again but ended up needing to create a new save file.

*END OF SEMI SPOILERS* [/EDIT]

[EDIT] Sorry about all of the edits. I just played 'Jewels of the Black Widow' and found out it was a demo, and that you get the full version with LHOD - did you only just start putting it in? Because I checked my disc and couldnt see it anywhere. [/EDIT]

Thanks for the comments Anlino and Jiffy - "Jewels of the Black Widow" was actually not developed in Darkbasic. Thanks for pointing out that save game thing. Yes... "black widow" has recently replaced another bonus game on the cd. So It may not be on your cd.

Very nice job! Glad im not the onlyone who remembers T7G

Anyway, im a little confused. Were there supposed to be puzzles in the demo? I walked over the entire house, and couldnt find anything to do really (I did put the torn paper back together). Am I missing anything?
