Wow, I'm behind the times..

I used to use cooledit, and it was teh bomb.

I want to purchase it, but it appears to have turned into "adobe audition" and retails for 300 usd.

Is there someplace that still sells cooledit 2000?

I just want *legally* that old program I used to love

Or is there an alternative?

I need something that can record from the mic (ie, guitar and singing), clean up any background noise and whatnot.

Also something that can record from a vinyl or a tape, and clean up the hissing popping and whatnot.

Basically what cooledit did best

I have a demo of cool edit 96, and its not time limited, but each time you open the program you choose 2 things you want to be able to do. It does what you need (noise reducing, etc). Want me to zip it up for you?

Ahh, I remember that old CoolEdit demo, I used to use it a lot, it's great for weird jobs like setting an exact length on a .wav - It was very much like the first generation of samplers on the ST and Amiga, only much more advanced.

I like Wavepad, or even just the sample editor that you get with Nero, I tend not to do very much sample editing these days - I'd probably spend the money on a good sample library before worrying about sampling software.

I don't want sampling software..

I want something that can record and clean up records and tapes..

Or separate the sound from an mpeg so the sound can be cleaned up and reinserted.

Or record from a mic and clean it up and convert it to an mp3..

Stuff like that

I have that Nero thing that came with my CD burner, it's pretty awesome!

But, if you don't want to buy a CD burner, Audacity is the way.

audition is good - i've used it once before, but i've got to say Nero Wave editor is 100 times easier to use and practically does the same thing anyways

Audition is -exactly- the same as cooledit, just has a new name when Adobe bought the program off of the original creators.

WindowsXP Home(Service pack 2), Athlon XP 2400+(2.1Ghz), 1GIG Ram, Ati Radeon 9800Pro 128MB.

Cool Edit Pro 2.0 is probably what you're after. It has a built in sequencer and many more filters and features than 2000 or '96 but looks like it might've been nabbed by Adobe. Anyway, I use it, it's great.
