I've been trying all day to connect 2 PC's running on Win2K and Win XP. The equipment parts are all working - i've tested the bl**dy things thrice now. I've tested the cables. I've tested the ethernet cards.

When I connect the PC's all I get is 'Network cable is disconnected' on one, and the other (the XP one) can't access the net... It won't fetch a dynamic IP from my ISP.

Argh.

(Yes, my connection settings are correct)

I hate PCs.

Why does everyone allways mension routers? Switches are much better, they simply don't have settings, so there is no way of screwing up.

I still hate PCs.

And I want to keep the solution simple - since it's not MY computers. But haven't you noticed? You start to do something that should be really simple on a PC, and then many hours later you're bald and hurting. Your reputation as a computer savvy geek has been seriously dented...

Friends snigger behind your back. Grandmothers point you out on the street. Police cars keep driving by your house. The pub mysteriously close when you get near....

I thought a crossover cable was quite simple...

sounds like you're trying to use a sraight patch cable, if you aren't using a hub/switch then you need to use a crossover cable or they will both try to transmit and recieve on the same lines instead on one transmit on the line the other recieves.

You never answered my question.
If I could have your computer, since you hate it, that'd be great. Thanks.

I am of course using a crossover cable. It's not the hardware that's irksome. It's just windows. Anyways, if it were my machines, I'd dump windows and run the XP machine on Fedora Linux instead. But alas, Linux is mostly not for the non-technical people.

They only give you answers,

That's why, use a LEGO COMPUTER!

Yeah, while you're at it, look up the correct spelling of 'British'.

Perhaps he's talking about Britt Ekland, the swedish sexbomb of the sixties? Okay, didn't think so...
