What is your favorite video game(s)? It can be for computer or a console. Why are they so good? What is good that they do and what could have been done better? Here are the categories:
1)RPG
2)Simulation
3)RTS

I'll start:

1)Pirates of the Caribbean
Weaknesses-2 fairly noticable very annoying bugs. Not
enough to do after a while. Sometimes not enough
freedom (ie: not being able to kill people in
buildings)
Strengths-A lot of freedom. Great graphics. Fairly good
combat
system. Ability to equip different weapons. Ability to
take over/destroy other ships. Reputation changes as
well as alliances.

Ratchet and Clank
Weaknesses-hmmm...none that I can see
Strengths-Just a fun game, with lots to do. Variety of fun
weapons to use, good graphics.

2)Simulation

Hmmm...Sims and Sims 2 arent bad.
Weaknesses-Just seems to get boring after a while. You
can't follow your sims to work/school and you cant
have ur own car.
Strengths-Fun for quite a while, nice graphics, you can
build your own houses.

3)RTS

American Conquest Fight Back
Weaknesses-not the best graphics, but then again its an
RTS. You should be able to see into the
buildings ur guys go into. Not a very good
World Builder.
Strengths-up to 16,000 men in ur army!!...so realstick
army sizes. You can barracade yourself in
buildings and shoot out of them. Ability to
control each individual unit, cool features,
like people run when they get scared

Empire Earth
Weaknesses-Not a very high unit limit (600 max). Not the
greatest graphics, but it was made in like 2000-2001.
Strengths-All the basics of RTS's, spans over a more than
8,000 years, where you can play in most any time
period. Variety of units.

Now what is the most DISSAPOINTING game uve ever played? Note that these are games you thought would be good but disappointed you in their quality, these are NOT the worst games youve played.

Here are mine:

1)Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and Lord of the
Rings: The Two Towers.(PS2)

Why: Terrible, well none at all actually, camera controls.
Doesnt follow movies very well. Stupid missions. It
just doesnt have the feel of the awesome movies.

2)not sure

3)Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth (PC)
Why: Now dont get me wrong on this one, this isnt a bad
game,
I just expected more than it gave me. It fails to include
many of the basic fundamentals of RTS's, such as you are
only able to select units in groups, you are forced to build
only at predetermined locations on the map. Very low number
of units you can control. Not enough free choice in the
which mission you want. While this game adds many things to
RTS's (ie: Unit emotions, whats really cool is when ur
horseman just slam through enemy ground units ), the game
fails to keep many of the basic RTS fundamentals. It also
does not retain the feeling of the movies, such as the
massive armies, huge battles and intense battles.

Okay hopefully people will reply to this, your turn...(note: you dont have to make ur stuff as long as i did, and if u dont have one just say i dont know)

Video games…they can take you places unreachable, impossible, unfeasible. They put you in the book...they put you in the movie...they put you in a world, a world that before could only be imagined.

Well, I rarely play RTSes, PRGs, or Sim games so I can't really yalk about those.

The most disapointing game I ever played would have to be, hand-down, Halo. With all the hype it got you'd think it would've been the next Half-life instead it was just a lack-luster game that, although probably amazing for console gamers, didn't excite me as a longtime PC FPS aficionado.

Ratchet and Clank really isn't RPG or RTS either, it's like...Action Adventure, and what about platformers?

Favorite Games:
Halo/2 - offered a more dramatic plot than your typical Half-Life adventure, unforunately they made a good business move and made the ending a cliffhanger for Halo 2

Beyond Good And Evil - Easy to just sit down and play for a while, look at all the funny people, and lots of incredible music. It was a little short though.

Oddworld Stranger's Wrath - The world portrayed in this game has a humorous attitude. I'm a newcomer to the Oddworld series, and because of the fun I'm having in Stranger's Wrath I'm probably going to go nab Munch's Oddyssey, and possible Abe's Oddyssey and Exodous if I can get myself a playstation.

Final Fantasy 8 - Musical quality once again surpassed. If you ignore all the FF1-6 purists you'll find this is one of the better soundtracks in gaming, though it has probably already been surpassed by FF10. They buried alot deeper into character development(not XP, I'm talking about dialogue and story) moreso than previous games (and newer games as well), which is a bit modern for its time, but I'm grateful it did, despite the somewhat boring plot.

Others to mention but not comment on:
Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Starcraft, Warcraft 1,2,3, Call of Duty, Metal Gear Solid 1/2, SW: Knights of the Old Republic

Disappointing Games:
Lords of Magic Special Edition - Perhaps I was too young, but I immediately lost interest in this game. Not enough direction for beginners and AI that was too tough once again for the beginner. I found Age of Wonders much more enjoyable.

Pirates of the Carribbean - Just plain boring. Tried to be an Elder Scrolls game (which I already find hard to get into), and once again because of a lack of direction I stopped playing. When I say lack of direction, I'm saying I am both not motivated to play this game and am not given any coherent instructions on how to play this game.

Evolution Worlds - I hate random dungeons with no decoration whatsoever inside of them. They need to die as this game needs to die.

Baten Kaitos - I still am kind of enjoying this game, it has a fun battle system, cool music, and very pretty graphics. Sadly the plot seems pretty boring because it is powered by crummy dialogue, and the voice acting is the worst I've heard. To make matters worse, instead of the game developers making me like that characters, I am learning to loathe them. Kalas is a cocky bastage. and Xelha is an annoying little girl. There is no life in the characters of this game.

Command & Conquer Generals - Kind of fun, but not Command & Conquer. Red Alert 2 was Command & Conquer in its prime.

ok, cool, so i really classify the Action/Adventure under RPG and same with platformer, like the Jak and Daxter series, so lets do this:
1)RPG/Platformer
, sry to hear ur dissappointed in Pirates of the Caribbean, i was partially dissappointed in it myself, i expected it to be the best game ever made, when it wasnt.

Video games…they can take you places unreachable, impossible, unfeasible. They put you in the book...they put you in the movie...they put you in a world, a world that before could only be imagined.

1)RPG
Loved:FABLE
Great scenery and action, weapons are very cool, and the story line is good.
Hated:FABLE
Because if I believe anything I read about it before buying it, I should still be playing it no?

2)Simulation
Loved:Flat Out
It's a car game, but the sort of car game that we don't often see. It's like the older stunt style car games - it has an awesome physics engine, and the tracks are insane. There's lot's of stunts, set piece stunts, races, crashes, ragdolling... everything the body needs.
Hatedriver3
Too difficult, the PSX versions were difficult, but cool so you wanted to play - the new incarnation just embarasses my XBox.

3)RTS
Loved:C&C Generals
Nice long 2 player skirmishes are my bag, Generals is ideal for skirmishes - especially if you go the Chinese and build tons of hackers.
Hatedraetorians
Because a 12 year old kicked my ass at it last week.

4)FPS
Loved:Men of Valor
It's an awesome game, especially in co-op mode on a nice big TV, made by the MOH:AA team you play a black marine in Vietnam, which is novel. Everything is here bar controllable vehicles, there's fox holes, bunkers, and tunnels - the tunnels are very well done. It's like a videogame of the 'Tour of Duty' TV series, highly recommended.
Hated:Unreal2
Graphics are nice, animations are terrible.
Characters are cool, storyline sucks.
Aiming is nice and responsive, but you move too slow.
This is on the XBox version mind, so I can't really vouch for the PC version, but I only really completed U2 so I would'nt feel like a tool for spending £40 on it. I like the Unreal franchise, but what I like about them is how they've set the scene - Unreal2 spends far too long faffing about with characterisation and bad plot, and not long enough on gameplay polish.

C&C are good, but i dont like the Final Fantasy games either, Ive only played 10 and 11, but theyre combat system just ruined the whole thing, i hate turn based games, way to slow for my taste, if you want it to be about strategy, go buy a board game or an RTS. Also the camera angles are probably the worst i have ever seen in my life, the camera stays still and points at you until you go to a seperate area. The one thing they did right is the near perfect graphics, i couldnt believe my eyes the first time i saw the water in the game, it was so real. But this is pretty much what you do in Final Fantasy:
-Watch a 5 minute movie with awesome graphics
-Go into your control (with bad camera angles)
-Walk 5 feet
-Fight a very slow paced battle (I hate turn based because i like
realism, and no two enemies are going to sit there and let the
other attack, and just wait theyre turn)
-walk 5 more feet
-watch another 5 minute movie
-repeat

so ur pretty much watching a movie the whole time, the only thing i found fun, even though it was partially turn based, was that underwater game thingy, forgot what its called.

I guess another dissappointment for me would be Lord of the Rings: The Third Age because of its boring, slow paced style, the most stupid thing is that you cant see your enemies until ur in battles with them! Its just about the most boring game ive ever played, graphics arent even that great either, and at least Final Fantasy wasnt based on anything, so it can create its own style, but this was based on the movies, and it COMPLETELY took that feel away from it. You dont sit there in the movie for 3 minutes, taking turns attacking 2 orcs. When will EA Games get these Lord of the Rings things right!

OK, about limiting the genre's, I classify certain parts under those titles, such as Action/Adventure=RPG, Myster/Horror=RPG, Splinter Cell=RPG. If you play the role of a character its an RPG, if you play a role as a commander/god its an RTS, if you have a gun and you walk around shooting people its an FPS, if you play a game that puts u into an actual reatchable position, such as flight simulator, its a Simulation. Also to add to my list:

1)Star Wars Galaxies (MMORPG)
Weaknesses-professions arent balanced out very well, which they
are going to fix.
Strengths-so many things to do, good graphics, fun to play, make
friends, you get houses, you get a variety of weapons.

Video games…they can take you places unreachable, impossible, unfeasible. They put you in the book...they put you in the movie...they put you in a world, a world that before could only be imagined.

Favorite games of all time:
1) Ocarina of Time (N64) - unrivalled in its pure magicness (if that is a word)
2) Majoras Mask (N64) - equal to ocarina, if not better, but ocarina came first
3) Hitman 2 (GC) - creates the amazing illusion that you are a hitman working for an agency
4) Morrowind (PC) - sheer brilliance, would be higher if the graphics weren't turned down so much on my pc
5) Viewtiful Joe (GC) - finally, a game that is challenging and not just a pretty river side stroll, its original aswell
6) Harvest Moon (GC) - calm, peaceful and original; a perfect retreat after assassinating a russian general or two in Hitman 2
7) Super Mario Bros 3 (SNES) - a fairly free form platformer for its time
8) Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - brilliant graphics and tons of secrets
9) Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES) - ditto
10) Ring Worm (PC) - perhaps its a little arrogant putting my game in here, but I like it and its one of my proudest achievements

Simple... yet fun!

I know a lot of people that despise Majora's Mask, but maybe it's just me, but I think Majora's Mask, like FF8, arrived before its time. Majora's Mask and FF8 delved deeper into individual NPCs' lives which is quite interesting, but people weren't quite ready for it. Sorry for repeating myself, but this is probably the next step in the evolution of games. Animal Crossing has already had a fairly successful bout on the cube, and it's entirely on that concept. I didn't like it too much, but change the setting to something a little more mature with a linear plot and you could conjure up some deep emotions within players, which is probably what all of the older generation gamers are going to want when they start getting old and they're not in the mood for Unreal Tournament lest they have a stroke. To quote my grandfather who watched as I played ZeldaoT for the first time, "Quit making him run, I'm getting tired."
