All I can say--- wow. If you've played ANY of the famous PopCap games, then you'll know that the technology that powers them is pretty amazing. They create games that are both downloadable *and* can be played in a browser.

Anyways, their framework is C++ and totally open-source. You don't have to give them any money, either. They'll also publish your game if it's good enough.

Their games: http://www.popcap.com

Framework: http://developer.popcap.com

Nice stuff for sure - but it's just a C++ framework and doesn't support any of the free compilers like Dev C++ (etc), which isn't a bad thing, I'm just pointing it out. Before people sign-up and download make sure you know your C++ very well and actually use Visual Studio, porting it to another compiler could be fun because there is loads of in-line assembler to change

I can't see how it will make games you can play in your web browser - those are all written in Java, this is a C++ framework.

Cheers,

Rich

There's probably an all-purpose java applet that uses JNI to import the C++ project and load it up. With a set framework, they'd already know what methods to call and the same Java code could be used for all games. Of course, I don't know for sure - I'm just speculating.

Hmmm--- you're right. I just looked in their forums and PopCap have yet to release their web framework. They switched everything over to ActiveX apparently, so they don't want to release their old Java framework. They also said that it wouldn't take a lot of work to port a game to their web framework.

On a side thought, if they're using ActiveX now, I wonder why I'm able to play the games using Firefox? I never thought about that until just now...

Perhaps.. but you don't get it in the download

I just ran a couple of games from their site in Firefox and they were both Java games. Perhaps it detects this? Or perhaps they just don't use ActiveX very much yet?

Yes this is probably what it's doing. I will keep campaigning their forums for a release of the Java framework, but honestly I'm happy enough with the C++ one. I can't use it yet (still using crappy wife comp), but soon enough after I get the new job next month I'll be getting a new comp.

Anyways I'll post here if I find anything else out.
