You locked that sucker quick, didn't you Van-B? I didn't even get a chance to reply to your unwarranted and personal comments about me in the appropriate thread.

Niggly? Why do you write about TGC in that manner. Show a little respect.

Here are two links to set you straight. This is work Jan-Feb I have other stuff going. As a moderator you may want to stick to the facts in the future and quit your emotional distortions.

http://www.dbspot.com/NYC/ It's been moved or deleted but it was a link the New Year Primitive Shapes Competition where I made an entry.
http://www.heartbone.com/various/SlotRacers.html

So I have coded something, is that good enough for you? Have you any more unjustified complaints Van-B about my post? An apology from you to me is in order, but I won't hold my breath.

FYI: I use patch 4 and I am patiently waiting for patch 6 so I can program with the promised fixes and updates. It's fine that TGC can program FPSC using DBP, it really would be nice if the customers could use the same compiler.

Niggly huh?

Heartbone,
You complain about absolutely everything, so I'm not surprised to have this topic appear. I was also not surprised to see so many 'but I can't' posts, in fact I expected them as well which is why I posted that - I really did'nt mean to direct it at you personally.

I locked it because of the reason I stated in that topic - nothing to do with what you posted.

Pah, just responded to this as it got moved .

Heartbone,
I did'nt lock that topic because of what you posted, I stated why I locked it and any mod would have done the same.

I did not mean to direct that 'because of all the bugs' comment at you personally, but I knew we'd have plenty so that's why the sarcasm crept in.

When a thread gets locked, it isnt an invitation to start another. Both Heartbone and Dugzilla started a seperate thread after the locking, pretty much to directly attack another member of the forums.

I was a little disapointed that that (w00t double use) thread got locked. I was actually enjoying the discussion for once (just never had time to type a full response[edit] or even any response at all [/edit]).

Then again, it was turning into a "He said, she said" sort of arguement, so maybe the locking was for the best.

I did not indicate that I thought that you had locked the thread because of my post.

Quote: " You guys make it sound like DBPro is a dead product - yet it's just been used to make a potentially market-breaking product.

Lee, maybe you can look into cell-division, try and divide into about 3 or 4 seperate people. Mike, you concentrate on cloning...

Daft I know, but TGC is a small company, you all knew that from the start, if I was constantly finding bugs in DBPro I might have a different POV, but frankly I think I've had more than my moneys worth - and I have no plans to switch. {snip}"

Van-B The only part of your post that I can agree with is that I too feel that I have received good value for my money, and I have no plans to switch to a new 3D Windoze programming tool.

But until you made it, TGC being a small company was never a point of the locked discussion, it's a 'red herring'. An important red herring, so I'll quickly give you my take on your point. If the DBP revenue stream is insufficient to support adequate DBP development, then the price of admission must be raised for the new users. I think that the product (when working as promised) is worth $299 US boxed and manualed.

Anyhow thanks to Lost in Thought, Nicholas Thompson, Squidgy The Brick and Benjamin for the good discussion in the locked thread.

You think that $299 figure is unreal?

Let's look at the history of another development tool on the Windoze platform, Captivate.

PC Magazine Editor's Choice
June 17, 2003
Camstudio 2.0
Screen capture with sound

The original product page is attached (118KB) as archive (note: Free & Open Source)

The current web page: http://www.rendersoftware.com/index.htm
Points to: http://www.macromedia.com/software/robodemo/
Points to: http://www.macromedia.com/software/captivate/

Price history 6/2003 12/2004
Camstudio 2.0: Free - Full functionality
Camstudio 2.1: 21 day demo - No .swf generation
RoboDemo: $299
Captivate: $499

Captivate Overview
Macromedia Captivate (formerly RoboDemo) automatically records all onscreen actions and instantly creates an interactive Flash simulation. Point and click to add text captions, narration, and e-learning interactions without any programming knowledge.

It is still Camstudio, but Captivate does a bit more a bit better.
- Visual Timeline
- Built-in audio editor
- Demonstration and Simulation recording modes
- Breeze support (these are the big things)
- FlashMX 2004 support

So now if you are an educator or product demonstrator who wants to record your screen activity into movies with sound, you'll be automatically guided to $500 software.

Macromedia knows how to make money.

Yet if you know where to look:
http://www.funchords.com/favorite/freeware/cam_studio_20/

DBP might get more respect at that price.
We long suffering earlier adopters would also feel better knowing that we saved $200.

Peace, the anti-Bush.

the killer product for TGC would be DBP for the web. imagine web pages driven by DBP in all it's glory. real 3d stuff, compiled on the target machine as it's downloaded, that would be awesome due to the small size of the DBP source. it would certainly give flash and the likes a run for it's cash. and it's still DBP!! how many developers and webby designers would be gobsmacked by this new technology? loads!!!! DBPWeb A killer app. well worth £300!!!!

I'm sure there used to be a VB program that would allow DBPro programs to be run from a web site (in a browser)...

I just thought I would reply to a comment or two while this thread exists

Quote: "Maybe when you guys grow up and have to pay some bills you'll understand a little better the predicament that TGC is under."

I understand that bills have to be paid, but other companies manage somehow, its all a matter of good management and effort.

I'm not really agaisnt TGC, its just that the way they manage stuff bugs(excuse the pun) me. I mean, as I said before, I paid money for something that was less than stated, and still many months on its not fully what DBP was stated as on the site/box.

Quote: " When a thread gets locked, it isnt an invitation to start another"

Damn, and for all these years I thought it was. No offense but I have heard that saying a lot and its getting rather old, especially seeing as the only reason you don't want the conversation to continue is because you don't want it to. Try not to be offended by that, this is a debate, not an arguement.

I personally don't believe the answer for TGC is to pump out as many different products as they can. As I've said before, that's good for short term profit, but you'll find that the company will become dependent upon that. Eventually the coders will burn out and the company will collapse. DBP just isn't a strong enough foundation in the state its in to support these different endeavors.

I'd really like to say I proudly use DBP and gives shouts out in the splash screen of my current project, but the fact is, I don't. I'm using a different engine now, because I dread workarounds. I'm tired of them.

Actions speak louder than words.

Finally my opinion on this topic. Because I never had an opportunity to give it. Although the use of the term "might" and the phrase "patient and lucky" at this point in time to describe us (DBP users) is unbelievably condescending and very loud indeed. It is hard for me to believe that is a real quote. If it is, that's out there.

I just went to verify the quote and it was there from yesterday.

Today is different.

Quote: " Also double checked DBPro latest with the entire FPSC game engine running through the DBPro debugger, again all was fine and well. We have also scheduled an official bug week for DBPro fixes, and an IRC chat session at the end of the first bug fixing day, so plenty stuff ahead for DBPro users. "

Yes - the bug week is at the end of the month... Hopefully it should solve most DBPro problems if all of Mouse's bug-list are dealt with.

And will DarkSDK be updated too ?

If DBP is still 2nd priority until FPSC v1.0 is out... well, what can you do? I honestly don't think FPSC should have been a priority in the first place until critical level bugs in DPB were fixed. Product or no product, there's a moral obligation not to break a product with an update that's supposed to fix it, and then leave it there for seven months. My two cents

It is a perilous occupation for TGC to post anything by way of a promise, as the words get etched in indestructable marble for all time.

You know Windoze is actually a very nice Windows 3.x game created in 1993. A blatent Tetris Rip-off.
Interesting to see someone really like it.

Since everyone else is giving their two cents, I'll give mine. FPSC is released, so I'm a little worried when I read about the DBP updates in the newsletter. Almost all are commands for amalgamating FPSC and DBP together! While this might be a good idea for the small percentage of users who want these features, the majority of DBPers just want the debugger and other features to work.

I didn't know that Jeku. I am worried too. Learning about the work on compatibility with unfinished 64 bit processors, while so many core functions remain incomplete is surreal.

At this time it's brutal to learn about the continued development of FPSC when the DBP compiler is such a mess and with no high priority plan to fix it. Literally hundreds of users projects continue to languish so one project may succeed. We continue down a strange path.

I agree that DBPRO has a lot of problems - but there are workarounds.

When I first got DBP, I was going to send it back for about a week until I actually started learning the workarounds - It can do anything you want it to - if you know how.

Really Benjamin!!! - your so sharp it makes my eyes water, you'd think we never had countless threads like this in the past.

Can this thread die now please, or do I have to lock it and wait for the next one to appear because that's more tiresome than most people would think.

DBPro bug week 2 is comming up soon - let's wait and see what that brings huh?
