Avalon Preview

Not sure how many people know what Avalon is, or if this has been shown yet.

Avalon 3D is Microsoft\'s Next Generation of the Windows API. Giving developers complete control to 2D and 3D Window Development Via a simple XML (HTML-Style) Script.

The Streaming Video (Windows Media Format 9) above, is a 20minute interview with Daniel Lehenbauer.

During the interview he shows how easy it is to quickly create, and build Avalon applications in Visual C# Whidbey 2005.

For those who are interested in just more than looking, then Microsoft currently offer Visual C# Whidbey 2005 Express. A free edition of Visual C# 2005, which is 100% Compatible with the WinFX SDK.

More examples of Microsoft Window\'s Codename \'Longhorn\' can be found here

Man that Avalon is pretty impressive, it's just like a standalone game engine but using XML rather than basic or C++ which is kinda wierd in my opinion. But with solutions like Avalon and XNA coming out i see the long hard process of creating game engine's from scratch fading far far away.

Anyways Longhorn looks pretty good and seems to have a lot of functionality from all those videos but i hope XP doesn't go extinct when it arrives 'cus it looks like it has way to much overhead for me to purchase just to use as a game making/playing operating system!

[edit]

Just some info concerning the new Avalon preview version before you run along and download it.

Quote: ""However, Microsoft warned developers that the code in the current version is pretty rough. The company recommended that it not be used even on a primary development computer, with bugs likely and a good chance users would eventually have to reinstall their operating system once they were done with the Avalon preview.""

according to cnet.

Painful? I do not understand.
As it is still a beta, then yes. Microsoft always recommend fully reinstalling your copy of Windows prior to using the release.

They had the same warning for .NET Framework 1.0. It is mearly a pre-caution.
