I'll make the obligatory mention that the sticky thread for modellers at the top of the 3D Chat board is always the first place you should look.

There really is no 'best' since everyone learns differently. Perhaps the best thing to do is to download a bunch of freebies and try them out. Perhaps make a basic straight sword in each one and see which user interface works for you.

Most people have their favorites, for example, I'm a fan of Metasequoia LE since it also complements DoGA CGA very well. [If you go to the modeller sticky thread and read my DoGA/Meta post you'll find some handy links.]

How much are you willing to pay first of all. 3ds Max is $4,000, Cinema 4D is somewhere around expensive, Milkshape 3D $25!! $35 if in the USA. Rhino, expensive. (when I say expensive, I mean more that $799) Wings 3D?? good price, don't know about its interface though.

Ah, but how well do you really know MetaLE? Pushing a few verts around is one thing, but have you played with its advanced features?

I use wings3d quite a lot. It has a different approach than most modellers but it's highly intuitive. You can export to different formats. The texturing functionality is very limited but hey, ... it's freeware!

I'm with Jeroen, DeleD is a very easy program to learn. Thats what I'm using right now.

I use trueSpace 3.2. It is free because it is old, BUT NOT THE OLDEST VERSION! I like the interface and is very easy to use.

I use a bunch of modellers... It depends on what I'm trying to do. Some modellers are better laid out for organic models, some for non-organic models and some are better for architectural models.

I use (as I mentioned before) Silo for organic stuff, Anim8or for non-organic stuff and DeleD for architecural stuff.

I just can't get friendly with Truespace's interface. All of those odd icons that you can't make heads nor tails of...
