Urbia:: Rising

Part Final Fight, Part Zelda, Part Jak 2

Urbia:: Rising is a platformer that has a ton of hack n' slash combat inspiried by beat'em ups like Final Fight, Viewtiful Joe and hack n' slashes like Zelda. It is the story of a man named Andreas looking to start a new life other than the one he had as a gangster living a city known as Ghetto because it is a horrible place poor and unsanitary.

However things can never be easy. Andreas is attacked by some old rivals and left to bleed to death however he lives, his face has scars on it and he is pissed off. He has to seek vengenace so he wanters Ghetto looking for the gangsters to discover they've traveled to a cityscape known as: Urbia. He travles there and searches for these Gangsters and slowly a story unfolds. But before leaving to Urbia Andreas constructs a weapon, he constructs it out of a lamp-post.

On his journey to start a new life Andreas will meet many deranged characters and gain some odd allies unlike anything ever seen before. He'll also turn into one ofthe biggest druggies ever as this game will feature drugs that the player can use.

Planned Features:
Useable drugs
Intense beat'en up, hack 'n slash hybrid combat.
Tons of platforming that is enjoyable.
A free roaming city like Jak 2 just much, much smaller...
Mini-Games that will be posted up at a later point
Interesting Story
Secondary Weapons like Molotovs and Frag Grenades.
Lots 'o easter-eggs
Quasi-Motion Captured Animations
Cel-Shaded Characters
3 Playable Characters
Varied boss fights
And more to be posted...

Most of these will be implemented very son as I can add them I just have to get my code with sliding collision from Zedane as he was kind enough to help me out because I was struggling.

You want screens? Well here's some!
Original DBC Screens:

Old DBP Screens:

DBP is acting funny at the moment while I try to take a new screen featuring our newer hud so I'll post the newer screen up later.

Why is it called urbia rising? Is anything actually rising? What does "Urbia" mean? Sounds like a severe intestinal desease.

"Doctor, give me the news"
"I'm sorry son, youve got... urbia"
"NOOOOOOOOO!"

Looks pretty interesting, I want to see it with some models though .

We wont have actual models until the summer when I get Milkshape and Cshop.

Urbia is the city where it takes place, Rising is something you'll have to find out by playing the game.

Looking good. Its great to see progress in games, and this is the kind of progress I like. I think it looks very nice, and with some decent models in the future.. this game may take up quite a lot of my play time as when its finished.

Now keep posting the progress as you guys go.. its fun to see games moving forwards.

I second Jonny on that, its great to see a WIP that has put its graphics slightly second place to concentrate on the gameplay.

Thanks guys. Yeah graphics wont be the focus until we have the perfect gameplay down, as Gokz was inputting colision and gravity he said he loved my controls but the camera was bad so I'm currently focusing on that as I have been for awhile as this was something I realised. Meanwhile Cap'in Colorblind is hard at work on some music.

Yeah his music rocks. Unforutnaly the celshading is starting to slow the game down so the charcters wont be cel-shaded.

"Useable drugs" only if it's satire, like say the screen turns purple but you get 2x speed. But since this sounds like a serious RPG I doubt if that'll happen so I'll join the bandwagon and say dont

But having said that.. sounds awesome Keep it up

First off the drugs only effect gameplay It's like Narc except the drugs are made up they also add some effects to the screen.

Anyways it will run on lower end machines.

New shot: This is the finsihed hud and all though you guys can't see it the player is jumping. There are some bugs with the jumping that Zedane is helping me fix beause on MSN I asked where gravity was dealt with and he out of the blue was kind enough to give me some jumping code however in my project collision dies when the player jump...

Also on useable drugs think of them as power-ups except in the long run there are negative effects. We just wanted to use something real that could act like a power-up and give the theme we chose drugs all though since the story line would have a cliff-hanger there would have to be a sequel and we don't plan on having drugs in that...

hehe sounds like a cheap rip off but i like it . And so you can use a second camera and print it on teh screen in its own lil box, cause I wanted that in our syndicate game to show the other players views aswell as a team iso view. well hopefully mustrix sees this while im away!

*TO ANIME BLOOD*IMPORTANT*, like da game so far but, i know this is off topic but i needed to contact a sct member, i have a few probs, i haven't been online because BT broadband broke down, and is now fixed, but around the same time the server went down my ASDL modem broke (just my luck) and am waiting for a replacement, the only computer in the house with any working internet access is the old apple mac, i can't access the sct forums because the forums were programed mainly for PC users (and maybe new mac users)

Also I was ebay scammed, so the arrival of truespace 5 is delayed, but I will order a copy elsewhere when we get our new modem.
So I would really appriciate it if you told all of the other SCT members about this. Thanks

Anyways thanks for the info Seppuku we're still working on the concept art anyways because we've been having a hard time making likable charcters for the project you offered help with...

okay fair enough, at the moment i'm working on ronin, rush and the competition project, so it doesn't matter how long those images will take for that other project, i still need to juggle those projects with revision, so my progress on projects is a little slow. Man the modem still aint come...bugger

I'm working on a level editor that I can use for Urbia and another possible project that would use the same "engine" as Urbia, Thundre cats. I started off with a basic level editor Andrew Neale made for me to show me how to make one and I've added in scaling and rotating and various other things. Gokz is teaching about openeing and saving files for my level editor at the moment and I plan to add a texturing feature soon.

Is the city going to be tile-based or on a matrix?

It's going to be tiled based.

Also the plan for the level editor is to make it more of an "event" editor where you load .x objects or make levels and script events for things like platforms by adding in other .x objects in the shape of a platform.

I thought I'd post my question here rather than starting a new thread but how can i make an invisible 3d triangle to perform trigonometry in DB? Is there any way that wont slow the game down? I need to know this because I want to start work on making my camera good but I think the best to do that would be with tan, cos, and sin which all related to trigonometry.

Yeah but it's not even close to fuctional( The in-game menu) mainly because of some problems with pausing... I've had it work before in my RPG snippet awhile back but it doesn't work now? Does anyone have a suggested way of opening a menu that pauses the game because I have two sprites that I'm using for a menu that I have show up when shift is pressed which should pause the game because of repeat until but it doesn't also I can't get it t o work so when I press shift I exit the menu I know it's not as simple as going until shiftkey()=1 but I had dont some other stuff to try and get it to work but to no avail.

I posted some source at my forum for making a level editor if it helps any.

http://www.curvedbasic.com/Forum2/viewtopic.php?t=48

Basically replace the spheres with planes(for roads), and the cubes with buildings and you'll be set for any type of city level.

From the level editor, you can even add what you already have for scaling and rotating of each object.

If I were you, I'd get rid of the big gray blotches going through the yellow on your road texture. The reason being, if you're going to have lots of those tiled in a row, it'll look so obvious that they're the same texture pattern.
Here's an example image.

If anything, it could probably look really good if you made the gray blotches a little less evident and close. Err, hope I didn't confuse you to much. This is me just being really really picky. It's a good texture overall.

Keep up the good work with this project Anime Blood.

Yeah I've fixed that part of the texture and given it a more stylised look but I want to add more before I post the updated version and thanks for the link I'll check it out.

Yeah I've been adding some things to it and I'm going to see how some of the code MikeS posted at Curve Basic could fit (of course it would be tweaked and modified to fit our editor). Anyways right now I'm trying to this in-game menu to work and then I plan to work on the NPCS , though the collision problems in the air haven't been solved as Zedane and I are lost...

The ingame menu I'm developing for Urbia is simlar to this. However my menu will have 2 ways of rotatin there will be 2 "levels" each with three planes the down key will bring you to another level with another three planes.
