Didn't you hear? It's been set to infinity + 1.

If you log out, you can see it constantly updating on the start page. It must depend on how much is being used.

No, it's not an April Fool's joke. Infinity was, the upgraded storage space wasn't.

It's pretty obviously a response to Yahoo and MSN, who upped their own space to match Google. But the G is always one step ahead

A shame I didn't save their graph. Basically was a hand drawn graph (with a coffee stain) that showed normal mail, advanced mail, gmail, infinity mail (massive bar in comparison to all else), then gmail infinity +1 (was slightly higher on graph). Arf.

Cheers

Hmmm, just noticed the MB counter on the gmail opening page is still there, and constantly going up. Now on 2051mb. And that is what my storage amount says.... assuming it isn't part of the april fools joke, then are they simply adding mb's every day? So you basically should never be full up for long? Perhaps is some calculation linked to the decrease in hardware prices. ie. it goes up a mb every time a mb comes down a set price. Or something like that...

link probably doesn't work because of the https:// in the address, as in it is a secure site and this forum might be smart, or it might be some random bug

I thought of that. Took away the S and it doesn't help. I'm assuming it's some of the characters it doesn't like, such as the percentage sign.

Does anybody have problems with "infinity + 1" ?

The solution can be explained simply with BASIC commands. Here is an example :

Of course you can change the value

Except for of course infinity isn't a number--it's a concept of numbers going up up up forever

...and I currently have 2057 megs May have to leave mozilla up and running on gmail.com and try to run it up to 3gigs

I think it counts automatically?

Another topic for conversation, is 0.9 recurring 1?

FOR

1/3 is 0.3 recurring.

What are 3 thirds? 1.

So 3(0.9999...) = 1?

AGAINST

write down 0.9 recurring and tell when it becomes equal to one.

Your thoughts?

0.9 recurring is infintely close to one, but not quite

That's what I think, however the method using three thirds = 1 but also = 0.999 recurring is interesting.

Here's how i think of it:

1/9= .111111111
2/9= .222222222
3/9= .333333333
4/9= .444444444
....
9/9= .999999999

1/3 as a faction will always be 1/3, and 3 of them will be 1. However fractions shown as a decimal number will often be inaccurate. In the case of 1/3 being 0.333(recurring), the idea that 3 of those equals 0.999(recurring) works on the numerical basis rather then the fractal basis. With the numerical idea, you can go as far as you like, but eventually you have to give up and round off the number.

Remember pai = 3.1415927, some people have taken it to many decimal places without finding an end, it's one of those numbers like the square root of 2 or phi all of which in theory cannot be shown perfectly accurately using any number systems we use, this is why we have signs or symbols for so many of these numbers, because their true values are still unknown.

Here's something else for you:

Many mathmaticians believe that you cannot divide a number by 0, truth is you can.

Consider this:

1/0.1 = 10
1/0.01 = 100
1/0.001 = 1000
1/(10^-100000) = 10^100000

As you divide by smaller and smaller numbers you increase the result, so if you said that 0 is the infinitely smallest number in existence, therefore dividing by 0 would result in a value equal to infinity, the largest number in existence. Also, divide by infinity and you would get 0.

Quote: "0.9 recurring is infintely close to one, but not quite"

Following my theory, if 0.99(recurring) is infinately close to 1, and an infinately small number is 0, wouldn't it say that you actually have a value of 1 not 0.99(recurring)?

But then comes the question, how is that if you take the recurring 9's to infinity that you eventually get to 1 somewhere, even though all you're doing is adding a 9 in the next decimal place?

My final question: does it really matter?

I don't suffer from insanity:

I enjoy every minute of it!

hahah.. you failed math didn't you

Quote: " the largest number in existence"

Infinity isn't a number, it's a concept..

If you take recurring .9 to infinity you'll never come up with 1 x_x

You may as well say 1=2

1/3 is one part of 3.. 3/3 is 3 parts of 3.. That's why 1/3 * 3 = 1

If you'd like, you can think of 1/3 as .3333 to infinity + 1/3

Sorry if this topic was dead (but it doesn't quite look like it), but I have something to say about this:

One third can't be accurately represented in base-10 (the most common base number system) because 10 isn't evenly divisible by 3. However, it can be accurately represented in base-3, with .1. There are advantages to using different base number systems, like base-10 can accurately show a half while base-3's equivilant is .1 repeating.

I disagree.

Take the equation (n/0) for example.

The alternative way of expressing this is "How many 0s in n"? The sum of an infinite set of 0s is still 0.

Where the denominator is exceedingly small however, then yes, if you multiply that number by a very large number you will get closer to the target, but not at 0 itself.

I therefore prefer to refer to the answer as Undefined.

It really doesn't matter whether you use infinity / Undefined as the answer, neither is useful from a mathematical perspective.

Quote: "1/3 is 0.3 recurring."

I feel uncomfortable with that. 1/3 cannot be expressed as a decimal. I suppose you could say that the limit of (0.3 recurring)*3 is 1.
