Or more precisely, the collector's edition?

I just want to know how it is compared to the PC version... I've read some good reviews but I don't always trust them

The collector's tin has all of the original Dooms for multiplayer play on Xbox Live or splitscreen I believe--- well worth it for the extra $10 or so.

Is it fun? Is it easy to handle without a mouse and keyboard?

Thanks

Not yet, it is a must though - I wasn't sure if it'd have a co-op mode, so I gotta buy it for that alone. The split screen versions of Doom sound cool too, one of the games I miss most from the PSX was Doom in co-op mode.

The lack of a mouse and keyboard (you know you can get little USB adaptors for using PC mice and keyboard on XBox?) - might be more of a concearn with Doom3 than other games, I mean the PC version is pretty jumpy, and I reckon I'd miss the mouse for the speed of aiming. It might be the usual case where if you play it enough, you learn the timings of the weapons and can strafe out and shoot precisely - that's one area that is important in Doom, strafing, so the analogue strafe might make up for not having a mouse.

How's strafing faster on a gamepad than a keyboard

It's not, but the analogue strafe is so much better for aiming than just that right thumbstick. Like you'd use the right stick to look up and down and line up, and the strafe to slide left and adjust your aim. Once that technique has been mastered it's very easy to get into console FPS games. Most people try and aim with the thumbstick and get frustrated, while all they need to do is slow down a bit and think about how to place shots while remaining behind cover as much as possible.

I heard that they really had to tone down the graphics for the Xbox version though (you can see it in some screen shots but others look relatively similar) but I really don't know personally. The co-op mode does sound nice (they even changed the dialog so it talks to both marines) but besides that I think it's either exactly the same except for a couple parts they had to cut out due to the Xbox's limitations. Also, did you guys know there's a Doom board game (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/doom.html)?

It's probably best for people with crummy computers (ie: me).
The strafing for horizontal aim is kind of outdated - from the Goldeneye ages though. If you want to be a true pwninator at console FPSs then you've gotta learn how to use both in conjunction with each other.

Can't wait to pick up my copy, probably get the collector's edition for the making ofs and old stuff

You have to be pretty good overall with a controller with the new breed of FPS's on XBox, like Men of Valour, that is really tricky to aim because the strafe is so slow, it's more about hiding behind trees and quickly popping out to shoot them.

It's my aim to complete every co-op FPS on XBox, got quite a good track record - haven't completed a couple of the Rainbow Six games, but we've completed a good handful of them.

I got a chance to play it earlier today. Only REAL problem I saw was that the levels seemed alot shorter. Other then that, it played pretty fluidly. Though If i got an XBOX, I'd get it just for the co-op, I am such a sucker for co-op games.

Sigs blow.

I agree VanB.. Games that support co-op play in some form or another rank highest in my books..

Currently playing Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.. Quite a good game, the addition of the Co-op mode really adds a new level to it(to bad there's only 5 co-op levels from what i hear, i believe i'm on the 3rd).

As for single player i'm on the 6th or 7th level(20 hour's of playing so far if i remember correctly, and that's single player alone).

WindowsXP Home(Service pack 2), Athlon XP 2400+(2.1Ghz), 1GIG Ram, Ati Radeon 9800Pro 128MB.

Well apparently the Xbox version has the exact same content as the PC, but the levels are broken up shorter because of the memory limitations... but all of the levels are intact.
