I cant figure out how to link the bones to my models so that when I move the bones it moves the model also. Unless im going about it wrong, that is how I think it works. the tutorial and help files aren't really helping me.

can anyone tell me how to do this?

thanks

you have to use the Skin modifier in conjunction with the bones, i dont really know a lot about bones as i just use the Biped in character studio.

Add the skin modifer to the mesh you want the bones to interact with.

Using the skin modifier is pretty confusing... i wonder why they couldn't make it so you select the vertices that are controlled by specific bones, rather you have to play around with weird envelopes to try and encompass all the vertices you want for each bone.

Anyways for some reason i can't get it working in dark basic pro even after skinning so if you have better luck please let me know.

You can select the vertices to be affected of the bone.
Somewhere around in the modifier there is a little check-button wich says vertex. Check this you'll be able to select the vertices.

Xform is old-school and there is absolutely no reason to use that instead of skin.

It comes with 3DMax and is really just a set of functions inside Max. You need a cd key to access it, so if it came with your version of max you shud have another key.

You access it by going to where max has the tabs Geometry, Shapes, Lights, etc. Its the one at the end call Systems. You create a Biped from there. The corresponding modifier is called Physique.

With Character studio you can rig with envelopes or by vertex or whatever really. By vertex is better for me, although you will have to go through some tutorials to get to grips with it. I personally have a book on it, thats how i learned.

Never really liked bones in Max, didnt get to grips with the heirachy of it.

Sorry to Hijack this thread but...

doffer:
have you gotten a 3DS Max object rigged using bones and the skin modifier to animate successfully in dark basic pro? and if so then how?

@Hexgear:
I have DBC.
Don't use it much though
I do more grafic but cruise around on this side a lot.

So the answer is no, I have never tried that.
Sorry...
