Hey people--- yesterday (Friday) was my final half-hour degree project presentation, where I blew away the faculty with GameBasic I really think they were impressed, almost to a point of not believing that I only worked on it for one semester. We have to spend at least 100 hours on the project, but many people spend up to 500. I theorize that I spent close to 750 hours on GameBasic, so the work really showed in the presentation. I had a few sample games running on the projector and everything is good--- so now I'm done! Finally!

Good timing, too, as now I have an in-person job interview at a large game development company on Tuesday. I had previously had two phone interviews, and now I think I have 1 or 2 more, depending on how many eligible applicants there are. They will probably test my C/C++ skills, which will be about a 4-hour written exam including oral questions as well. I'm a little rough on my C++ skills so I'm hitting the books the entire weekend. Haven't felt like I've had a break yet :-P

Anyways, if I get the job then I'll let you guys know Just thought I'd share the good news!

Sweet as!

Great work on that.
I bet that you had the most impressive project to show, right?

What kind of marks did you get for it?

Hope your job interview goes smooth, and you get it
Hopefully, in another 3.5 years ( when my uni course ends ) I'll be in the same possition as you are now

Jess.

That seems a little excessive.

Tests are the norm these days. My friend interviewed with some company and the entire day was basically a test with official tests thrown in here and there. He had trouble thinking the first couple days after the interview. lol

EDIT:
BTW congrats.

Congrats for graduation!
Good luck for your interview! At least you got the right degree for the interview!
I have a Master in History, it's my other passion but not so useful in getting jobs about Information Technology!

Thanks for the good words, guys

Yes, it's in the Programmer's forum--- but good luck getting it to run. I don't think it can work on anyone else's computer but mine because of the ActiveX crap!

Quote: "I bet that you had the most impressive project to show, right?"

Well the thing is, most students create a PHP-MySQL website for their final project, and I just wanted to do something less boring. What better way to work with games than to create my own game language?

Quote: "What kind of marks did you get for it?"

Not sure yet--- should find out next week. I'm more worried about my upper level data communications course that most people get under 60%. I have a hard time with theory coursework

Quote: "That seems a little excessive."

It is excessive I think, too. And they're not even taking into account my previous programming experience on a commercial game! But I have a friend who works at the company and he gave me a list of things to make sure I study.

I'll let you all know when I get the job

Hey guys, I just had my grueling day of interviews at the game company--- there were 4 interviews and 1 written test over a period of 5.5 hours! I think I did really well, and I should hope to hear back from them soon. I'm really excited about the job, and I'll be sure to let you know the results (even if they're negative )...

Didn't get the position in the company I was going for because they decided to extend a current employee's contract instead, so they're trying to fit me into another position. Kinda sucks as the one I applied for involved travelling to California and the UK on a regular basis.

Anyways, I have another test at another company in Vancouver--- this test is two hours long on this Thursday and according to the email it will cover:

Quote: "general knowledge of computer science, including: algorithms, discrete mathematics and logic, languages/types, program control, data structures, databases/concurrency, OOD, system resources, and coding in your choice of Java or C++."

I took a University discrete math course, but I completely forgot all of it (hope the questions won't be too hard as they don't allow a calculator to be brought into the test). I will choose C++ for the coding sections...

Alright, now I need some more luck

Thanks for the bump, Drew

Well, as luck would have it, I have not been hired by said large game corporation. Don't cry for me, however, as I just got a job as a software dev working on image manipulation software for the same pay and better hours (you all know game programmers have crappy hours, right?).

Anyways, my true passion is the game industry, and as soon as a position opens up at the game company I originally applied at (as I'm still working with their recruiters), I should get in the door.

Yay!
