there are two types of gifs

graphics interchange format


87
and
89a

the latter retains an alpha channel by choosing one colour in the current pallette.

Gifs can only have 256 colours.

both formats are registered to Compuserve and cannot be used in a commercial sense without paying for a liscence use.



I think the load animation command allows for it
