Lol, check it out, http://www.sakakibara-kikai.co.jp/products/other/LW.htm I read about it in the newspaper, it goes at something like 1mph. It doesn't fire bullets but those pink squisy balls that are on the website, so it'd be great for terrorising the neighbours.
(notice how I didn't mention cats. Oops, I just did)

Bum flaps, I've stuck it on the wrong board, any chance of a friendly mod nudging me onto general talk, thanks in advance.

Except for the fact that cats run at least 20 times faster than that can walk

That is friggin awesome!

That's like.. the ultimate machine to peg cars as they ride by.. no guys going to come out and come after you, he'd be too afraid to get hit by one of the balls!

Besides, like some cops are going to believe.. "I just saw.. a giant robot, with this guy in it... It shot something at me! I swear it did, it was like.. a MECH or something!"

It looks a bit plasticy, and doesn't actually walk - more like slides along.

Yeah thats the only thing that dissapointed me a bit, it doesn't lift its feet very high. Still I suppose if it did, it might fall over.

Getting a Bi-pedal robot to move without falling over is one of the biggest problems stopping Honda from creating a robot that would be viable to help around the home (i-Robot NX4 Style).

Their reseach has really been excellent in the past few years though. The way they do it is weighing down the back with the same technology that helps buildings survive earthquakes. Kinda like a weighted pendulum that makes sure it's stablises the weight.

Problem is it can't move too fast or shift it's weight too far. Else it'll tip. While the above Mech has to also take in to considering the 150-300lbs of fat sitting in the cockpit.
Although it would be funny to see the pilot thrown around to balance the walking.

It looks like a first build, and one of those hobbiest kit projects. I'd say give it a few years, after working on the problem more they will come up with a better solution that might lift it's legs enough to see concrete underneath.

Still pretty cool.

And why shouldn't they - they've been doing it since Sylvester McCoy was The Doctor.

The episode was very good - I was expecting a lot more action though - some of it was a bit slower than it should have been.

This is the fastest bi-pedal robot. It runs at 3kph. Its quite old now, they may have improved on it.

There's also a robot that can climb stairs, and ones that dance.

I thought they had the hover things on the bottom in the original series too...?
I only caught the last 5minutes, didn't realise what the time was

Looks cool, I really like the new Darlik appearacnce too.. not the battlesuit but the actual alien look.
Though I'm not so sure I'm happy with this whole 'last of..' aspect they keep playing.

The Doctor, and Darliks were still knee-deep in the Time War in the original series' and I don't like the idea that there won't be another episode with more of this Doctor Vs Darlik action.

Back to the subject at hand though:

Your post just echos the points in mine above. If you read up on the research behind it, and also view some of thier 'blog experiements' it's very interesting.

I can totally see in 10years time, especially with Intel's new processor technology and IBMs current Data Storage technology having NX4 style Robot's in valued job services... Like Mail Service, or overly dangerous jobs.

Though Robotics is a little different to Mechs. As I said they've been able to really improve the design specifically over the past 2 years, to a point where thier current design can jog... JOG!
But you still have to remember that it doesn't have a person inside it, and they're specifically designed smaller in order to cut down on weight while still allowing for relative durability.

This is why they're currently Childsize in design. It's to mean that while the majority is made out of plastic it won't fail under it's own weight like previous prototypes when they fell-over (which happens a lot!).

Quote: "Cool! Makes you wonder... how are you sure the Japanese military don't have a Gundam in developement right now?"

I doubt they would, the technology is still years off to make it commercially viable to develop it. Particularly given Japan's economy right now. (Remember they were on the brink of being the next Russia only 3years ago, not that Britian is that far behind)

They do currently have a 'Spider' Tank design though under development. It's designed to be an All-Terrain-Armoured-Support-Vehicle (ATASV), and it works using 4 (rather than 6) Extendable leg pylons, that use a special Sphere Catapillar Track ball.

It can't hold as much ammo as the state of the art tanks, but the design allows it to cross terrain that would normally be only viable for on-foot travel. Like Mountain areas, or such.. It also if I recall not armed with much.

Just a .50 Calibre Assult Gun, and full scope 6" Cannon. Both armourments are fairly small and if you put it up against another tank, only the maneouverability would save the pilots lives.. not much chance of it actually doing much damage though.

When you think about it though... Humoid Robots are a good idea, given they could function in society better, but when your talking about mobility, speed and combat purposes. Other animals clearly have a better advantage from a design standpoint.

Bipedal robots are, in my opinion, a waste of time why not just use 3 legs? the whole balance thing is much easier to solve and it's cooler

Did anyone have the pnumatic lego technic kit, the ocean one came with it I think. That ruled..unfortunetly you only got one pump so couldn't make anything too good

I remember the old technic stuff, we have a few sets from different kits so we did try to put together some complicated stuff, I was only 11 back then so my mechanical skills were rather naff. Some of the stuff Lego has done in recent years is pretty impressive, programmable sytems with pumps, motors, god-knows what next though!

... Of course, with something so big, if it lifted its feet up pretty high, when they came back down again the shock would probably kill the pilot (or the machine would just break into pieces).

Um, Is it just the low quality of the videos, or did that thing not shoot anything? It looks like it just made a sound and the target fell over...

Anyways, that thing can barely move. It's like a big metal robot in a straitjacket and strait... pants.
