Hi all,
For a while now I've been thinking about 3d animation. Not the sort that is used in games where you have a shooting animation, running animation etc etc. I mean short movie type animation, so I suppose something that was used for FMV in a game would be okay. I'm posting here in the hope that someone knows something about this area, either FMV or fully movie orientated, and can point me in the right direction.

I currently own milkshape but I feel this is more suited to low poly models with short animations. I've looked at truespace but simply can't afford it and doubt I'll ever be able to.

Does anyone know of any sotware that I could use to accomplish my goal. Ofcourse FREE is my favourite word but I would be willing to spend upto £100 on a piece of software, once I was 100% certain it was the thing for me ofcourse. Thanks in advance.

p.s. If you know of a piece of software that would be ideal but is over £100 then I'd still like to hear about it. I would then have to opportuniy to at least get hold of a demo.

$100 for a quality CGI software, anim8or is good CGI, useless for gaming, not very powerful but its milkshape of the CGI world

http://www.anim8or.com

[Edit] Actually come to think of it in some places you can buy Truespace 5 for $90, £50, or Cinema 4D CE 6(only if the person got it from a magazine) for quite cheap too. Keep an eye on www.caligari.com once in a while they put truespace 5.2 for $90, £50

Thanks, I've actually installed anim8or before but I never really did anything with it (I mean anything) but I suppose now I've got a reason to use it I can take the time to get to know it.

I'll also keep an eye out for any special offers on Caligari, I think I signed up for a news letter that sent you details of them at one time so I'll have to see if I can find that again. Thanks again.

EDIT:: Just received my serial numebr for the demo of truespace 6.6, there's some info there about a competition. Every month, whoever makes the best image using JUST the demo of truespace 6.6 wins a full copy for free, but judging by the previous winners I've got a long way to go before that looks even remotely realistic.

Gamespace is a somewhat scaled-down Truespace and has tons'o features. I don't know the current exchange rate conversion to Euros or Pounds, I bought it for $299USD. One of the funniest animated videos I've seen so far was done with this software, try www.caligari.com and look for the "Matrix Reloaded" video -- they used South Park characters and IMHO it's one of the funniest videos ever made.

You might check out the new integrated Bryce/Daz Studio 5.5 release at www.daz3d.com. Daz Studio works with Poser characters, which IMHO are about the easiest thing to animate I've seen so far. Bryce's new upgrade lets you import the Poser content into Bryce scenes and animate them (at least, that's the claim, I just bought 5.5 on Sunday for $69 USD and am slowly coming up to speed on the new features). Anyway, there are galleries on the web site including videos that you can check out to see if it's what you're looking for or not.

@Swivel Games thanks for the link, I'll have a look at it.

@Clueless thanks for your help. I'll have a look at those as well.

@Swivel Games
That's a mighty fine link you've got there. It's not really the sort of thing I was looking for but after flicking through the forums I think it's what I'm going to have a go at. Not only is it cheap (Lego+eBay = not much £) but I can get simple results alot quicker than I could with a professional 3d app. Thanks again.

heh, i've made a few lego films...they are very tedious to create...frame by frame...7 frames a second(a reasonable speed...though i recommend 10-15)...for a 10 minute film...=4200 shots...(i did a 13 minute lego movie once..took forever )

soapy fish i can help you make an awesome render in TrueSpace if you want to win it.....really you get a free copy, I'll give that a shot too, how about an easy to model image taking advantage of trueSpaces' raytracting that will look impressive, maybe a glass of wine or a scene with simple objects in

Blender can be used to create animation sequences, although I can't claim to have created any myself.

I have a friend who has completed a full length feature film using Lightwave. You can view his work at http://www.haasanimation.com

EDIT - got the link working

OK, I found the video I mentioned earlier. It's called South Park Reloaded, based on the Matrix but done with Cartman and the boys. It was built and animated with Truespace. GameSpace has most of the features at a lesser cost.

This link goes to a tutorial page but there's a 3+ minute sample animation at the end of the page. Very funny!

@everyone
Thanks to everyone for all your help. Especially Seppuku Geijutsu for putting up with all my noob questions over msn.

I've got myself Maya 5.0 ple (personal learning edition, watermarks any work etc etc) and within 10 minutes of installing it I had something resembling a bouncing ball animation (must be the "hello world" of computer animation.) I've followed one of the supplied tuts and got myself a reasonable model of a hammer as well.

I'm going to stick with the brickfilms as well but I get the feeling if I get good enough at modelling most of my free time will be sucked into that.

Thanks again, and watch this space for my first short film. Thanks again.

Yeah, Maya is the one I wish I could afford, but I enjoy my car too much to give it up. Eating is sort of fun too.

Seriously though, if you can get good at Maya soapyfish, you've got a better chance of doing this for a living if you ever want to do so. All those movie studios can't be wrong... best of luck to you.
