Best *FREE* spyware remover is Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition: http://www.lavasoft.com/

Constant updates and finds much more than spybot, but always good to have spybot installed aswell as it sometimes picks up on things that adaware doesn't.

And for viruses, get *FREE* AVG Antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com

If you are using Windows XP and have updated regularly you should already have a basic firewall working. If using broadband ADSL and a router, then router should be configured to refuse all incoming traffic.

PS. What do you mean by 'showcase star thing'. I doubt anything downloaded from showcase on this site has any viruses or spyware.

Use *BOTH*. One will catch what may be missed by the other.

Spyware and Adware are the new viruses - looks like virus writers got smart and decided to use their talents for financial gain. Now it's a competition between coders to see who can make the nastiest adware. I can imagine the financial implications of making a solid and stubborn bit of adware would have for the coder, personally I blame marketting departments for most of the worlds evil, they can hardly swerve this one though.

Email style viruses are in steep decline, now we just have to watch absolutely everything we do online instead of just our email. Expedia are using quite a nasty variant that just makes me want to snap the greasy little coders hands off, personally I don't entertain products and companies that use adware - and if we all did that we'd see a destinct change in tactics, maybe stapling full page adds onto our foreheads while we sleep.

My mums work just had a nasty worm, Took a while to get rid of it, Got into there address book and sent the worm to other people.

Also, why do people create viruses? Is it for pure fun, Money, Competition or even because they get a kick out of it.

I think it’s really said how people do it and destroy millions of pounds of software every year.

i downloaded a game called Star Thing from the showcase. but i doubt there was a virus in the files it was probably just while i was downloading it a virus just got in becuase i dont have a firewall. and by the way i cant get any newer update from microsoft becuase the last time i ran system restore, it deleted VERY importent files from my computer so i cant even download DirectX9.0c but DBPro still rins with out it and i have directX8.0

Of course it is, but that has nothing to do with this thread. Last time I checked, notepad did not ward of spyware(unless there was an update i MUST have)...
