Hi,

I want to get into some c++ programming, I am a java/vb guru, so I am not after a c for dummies book, just a book that will teach me c with some advanced text thown in there also!

Also, I develop on windows and macintosh, so I am not sure if that will make any difference.

If anyone has a good book or website to recommend me, then please do!

http://www.lvp.com/cpp.htm

This was my school text book, and it actually does an extremely good job at teaching c++, as long as you do all the assignments and such in it.

the best C++ books I have (partialy) read, if it isn`t in here I don`t know where you would find it, a permanent copy is on my HD and backed up onto DVD, I value these books so much

Note: although they sell the physical books on this site you can download the text of the whole of both books free of charge from here too (as well as example code), the idea is that if you like the books enough you will buy a hardcopy (I will be ordering mine right after I get the car insured next month)

Thanks Mentor, that looks like a good guide.

I have a copy of Visual Studio.Net, is the C++ version the same as normal C++, or entirely different?

in C++.net, for most examples, just use the C++ console app template when you make a project or if writing a windows app then use the windows template, or use Gnu C++ if sticking to console programs, Gnu is supposed to be realy compliant with the C++ standards but afaik lacks somewhat in the windows dept (DX programs need a DLL to run for example), if you can find the demo Codewarrior v5.5 ide (mine came off the June 2002 PC plus superdisc 1), that has a pretty good C++ compiler built in too and the IDE is solid, the old visual C++ is not very compliant and most examples will not compile straight from most C++ tutorials (unless they where written for vis C ++ natch).
