My mom got (my current diagnosis) a computer virus. In the top it had a suspicious looking XP logo over a all blue screen when she booted up. It then in white text said some stuff (I didn't get a chance to read it all. She called me in and it was already into the "deletion" process, so I said "Turn it off, now!") something about the C:\ drive being (or not being, can't remember) NTFS file system. Then it deleted some jpgs, about 8, when I told her to turn off the pc. Unfortuanitly this happens during bootup, so we can't get into the pc without this message that it is deleting files (we don't know if it was lying or not). Anyone know of the name and how I could fix it?

Thanks,
Matt

Obviously a boot sector Virus, but unfortunately I'm not familiar with this particular one.

If you don't have a second hard-drive that you can use as a master and boot to an OS - you can create a set of emergency Virus Boot Disks, and set the Bios to boot from floppy.

Obviously, you'll need access to another computer that has a decent AV program which has it's definitions up-to-date. Most AV software vendors allow you to create these disks.

I believe there are also a couple of free one's available on the net. Housecall? comes to mind. I would have to check whether Norton/Symantec or McAffee has a free emergency download.

Last resort, Some Bios's are capable of running a boot sector scan and can "finger print" tampered boot sector entries. IBM comes to mind. So, it's possible that depending on your machine/bios, and the virus that has hit you, you may have a chance of simply running the built in Virus checker within the system diagnostics.

Good luck.
If you have no means to implement these suggestions let me know. I can send you Symantecs Emergency files. You'll just need a friend who will let you get to your email and create the disk set.

Does fdisk /mbr still work on ntfs formatted drives?

Even after you fix viruses like this on older systems you had to run it to fix the master boot record.

Also you may want to search antivirus sites for something like this. They usually have info or most current virus floating around.

Perhaps you can use the FIXBOOT utility in the windows xp repair console utility, located on the windows xp cd.

Try out the controller:-

Personally, I would get either re-format the HD and re-install everything, or preferably get a new HD.

I would take my h.d out, Get my other computer and add the hd in my old computer.

But if you do somthing like that make sure you dont set it as defualt etc , Check all of your settings.

And just go through the hardrive and see what has happend to it.
