DeleD?

DeleD and a few other programs are free on the CD of the book Beginners Guide To Dark Basic Game Programming

And wtih Audacity can't you record from a microphone, so that technically if you could sing (I mean sing good, not the American Idol singers) then you could make music. But if you want good software for those purposes than I would suggest you buy them.

ok, free stuff:

sound effects editor: Audcity. It's the one and only.

music creation: (ah the list goes on and on) ModTracker, Skale Tracker, Psycle Tracker, Fruty Loops demo (only restriction is you can't save your work, however compilation to mp3 is still enabled), Acid Pro demo (same as FL demo I think

That's all I can remember I use Audcity for sample editing and ModTracker for final mix, tho occasionaly I'll use Skale. I really want to learn how to use Psycle, but I just don't have the time. Remember, it's not the software, it's how good you are with working with the software

level editing: DeleD is my favorite, tho if you have UnrealED and know how to use it go with that instead.

BSP editing:er, lemme see.. Valve Hammer, Quark, andddd I think that's it

model editors: Wings3D is my favorite. Blender is *really* cool, but only if you are willing to learn the interface. I keep telling myself that I'm going to take a few hours and learn blender, but it never happens

That's probally a little more than you were looking for, but hey it may come in useful sometime Everything I've listed I use (and like, except for the BSP editors. I don't like BSP, you see .X shall rule the world!).

I use Audacity for sound effects.
All I do its this.

1. Record somthing like a door shutting.
2. Go to Effects and tidy it up , Change the pitch / tempo etc etc.

Works fine for me.

sndrec32 is a surprisingly lightweight, intuitively designed, well balanced, fully functional tool packed with as many features as could possibly fit into its trim and elegant interface. Praise be.

[href]www.Anim8or.com[/href]

If you don't know much about animation this might seem mind-boggling to use at first, but after reading the manual (on the site) then you should be able to make animations of every kind. My assessment of Character Shop: Character Shop sucks. It's nothing more than a collection of stock animations, and they aren't very good... you can't create nifty, unique animations with it. Anim8or lets you create anything and animate it how you want to. We're using it for FMV's, our company's splash screen, character animations, animal animations, vehicles, and all the meshes. I dunno, that's my two cents

Audacity can load VST Plugins I'm pretty sure. Usually I stick to Nyquist effects though.

I downloaded a dll that lets audactiy use vst plugins. When I launched audacity and tried to use delay lama nothing happened, it probably doesn't support vst 2 plugins. Anyone know of anything else?

ffs. There's a difference between VST and VSTi. Eric's plugin is a VSTi - it generates sound. A VST is a effect like, say, reverb or chours/flanger. Audcity is not going to run a VSTi because it's a sample editor, not a sequencer.

Best free vst host I know of would have to be psycle tracker. Check it out at http://psycle.pastnotecut.org/portal.php

edit: agh adr posted at the same time. mpt only supports a single vst per channel, it's not exactly the best even though I use it all the time
