Wow. I just downloaded Truespace 1.0 from PcPlus website yesterday, although I've known it was free for some time and have used it that way in the past. If you're looking for free stuff, you ought to try Jtedit. I think there's a thread about it recently on this board. Too bad I don't live in the UK. Hopefully they'll offer TS3 for download soon.

One of my favorites is DoGA CGA, it's a free download and its parts based metaphor is real easy to use. Of course, it has .X export (but no animation export.) It's a good tool for static peices like fighters and starships.

If you do get hooked by the DoGA bug, it can be quirky given how it exports materials. But, I usually post process my materials with a tool like Indotek's Materialize 3D.

Anim8or is free, and can export .3ds with limbs, which you can convert to .x with the free tool that comes with DB. I use it for everything, and it has animation facilities as well, bone animation and keyframes which you can render to .avi files. The texturing is a bit rubbish though, you can only texture an object in one direction. But it's free! www.anim8or.com

Check out wings3D. It's free and open source so you can expect frequent updates. Plus, it's probably the easiest modeling program I've been able to pick up on. It also saves to .3ds among many other file formats. It's great for no matter what kind of modeling you wanna do...Low poly for games or really detailed high poly for renders. www.wings3d.com

**This is not an animation suite. Its main function is quality models to be textured and animated with external programs...hopfully the developers (anybody with the source) will implement that some day.

My Specs: p4 2.2gig, 786mb ddr ram, 120 gig hd, Geforce4 128mb ti4200, WindowsXP.

Can't export animation and use in in DB with Anim8or. The only freeware program I've found to do that is JTEdit.

But Wings is free...And yo can still use another animator/modeler like 3dcanvas which's animations export very well.

AND

3DS max is NOT very user friendly.

Really,that depends on your devotion.

Personally,I see it as a very standard all-in-one software.

3dsmax is good once you know how to use it.But it takes a while to learn it. Can be confusing sometimes. Generally you need to spend some time on it to get use to it. lol

actarus: do NOT use NURBS....I beg u, stay away from the dark side!

subdiv, much better, but takes a lot of memory in maya for some reason.

but best of all, good "old fashion" poly-box-modeling.

I would recomend maya ple, maya is one of the most (if not the most) powerful packages out there. But remember maya is a this =-------------= big program with this =--= much plugins, with max it's the other way around.

Yep...MS 2.0 should be sweet.

There's so much free modelers....Just don't expect to find a freeware that'll do it all,you may have to use some other software to animate or texture but much of the rest can be used for geometries.

I highly recommend anim8or from www.anim8or.com (surprise?)..But I use 3D Studio Max 4. Anim8or is a very nice start to going into 3D modeling. It is very easy to use, and doesn't have all those thousands of commands .

Anim8or is a good choice and don't listen to the people that will say right away :'But it doesn't animate'...so what?It can export geometry?Get Lithunwrap(free) to texture it and 3dCanvas(55$US or the free version that comes with the DBC CD's) to animate it and you got yourself a start.

Using Max will cost around 10,000USD just for single game license.

Here is a list of the free 3d moddellers i know of which let you save files in a format DB can use:

Anim8or - www.anim8or.com
lets you save as 3ds files which can be converted.
you can do animation too...but i've never done that

Metasequoia - http://www1.sphere.ne.jp/mizno/main_e.html
got to be one of the best - can save files as *.x as well as many other formats.

Doga - http://www.doga.co.jp/english/index.html
there are 3 different programs L1,L2,L3 they get better as they go along. L1 is completely free and very easy to use - has about 500 preset 'parts' which can be positioned, rotated etc. L2 and L3 need to be registered. The feature "Render / View animations" is not available till you register, but that is OK for me as I don't do animations. all the programs support *.x file exports. you can't texture objects made in Doga L1 though

3d designer - http://www.3d-designer.com/index.html
this is a cool program but i have not downloaded it and tried it out. exports .3ds and .x files. shareware restriction means it puts a watermark in objects created though.

There are many more 3d designers but i won't list them all here

Hope this helps

OK- the final point is, just go with milkshape lol. Its 20 bucks. Face it- good and free dont really go hand and hand. Your simply NOT going to find a fully featured awesome free modeller. It simply doesnt work that way!

i know alot of people are going to bitch about Milkshape 2 - cause Mete is upping the price to $140 ... there are some very good reasons behind it, but i feel that i'd get the brunt of this if i explained

However the features right now are on par with Max, with booleans, splines, a render engine (^_^)
and the nice sparkly new interface - he's finally getting used to the .Net features hehee

really Free is well Free, you want something good in this game you've gotta pay for it
the more your pay the more features you get to make your life easier (^_^)
