Hmmm, so Longhorn users will probably never see the fabled red screen, we shall see .

If I recall Windows 98 First Edition had Red instead of Blue.. or maybe it was the beta.

Well regardless it's a good idea.
Blue = Windows Error - Reboot
Red = ReInstall Windows

Either way, the only time I've seen the Windows XP BSOD has been when my Ram died on me. So provided they've enhanced the Hardware diagnostic tools, there is a good chance most users won't ever see either.

I think the biggest improvement in Windows Longhorn is the internal reboot. Rather than rebooting the entire system, it can simply reboot itself.. much like when you change your desktop resolution, or appearance.

4-5seconds you'll get a blank screen and bam you'll be back doing what you were before without having to shut any programs down.

The thing that annoys me about Windows is the reinstalling, especially with XP - like one slight hitch on a PC with a single HD and it's a case of wiping the PC totally. I know there's people sitting waiting to say 'you should just...' - but I just can't see why it has to be as bad as it is.

I mean, it's not rocket science to ensure a backup of the registry - windows does this already but it means nothing if it can't be used in a reinstall. Same goes for any setting on your PC - I see no reason why all this stuff should be as disposable as M$ makes it, it's like they love you to reinstall their OS.

It's like Dell, you buy a PC from them with a 160gb hard drive, and you get a single formatted drive at about 145gb - nice size, shame about your personal files when your OS goes south. But, if they partitioned the drive, they'd have all sorts of idiots complaining about only having a 20gb drive C when they ordered 160gb. If I went to fix a PC and it was partitioned sensibly then I'd be so happy, it would save me so much time and trouble. This is the thing, fair enough if Longhorn needs to repair itself now and again, but if it's anything like XP when it comes to re-installations they can keep it.

My little brother installed a beta of Longhorn, within half an hour he had told me he wasn't too impressed, that says one thing to me: My little brother is not the best person to test this stuff.

Can't say I'm impressed with it.
It's changed during development from a pure .NET revolutionary Operating System, so a minor step to .NET integration with thier NT Kernel.

Effectively it's hardly going to be a major step forward from Windows Media Center 2005.

Honestly, I don't think they're going to impliment half the things promised. Still they have a year before they plan to release, so we'll see.

Apparently Longhorn will have the Red Screen for "really serious" errors and also the Blue Screen as well... But thats been mentioned before...

And it holds soooo much information...

Does anyone know if hardware error handling has been improved (ie put a corrupt CD into a drive, wait a while and try to eject it - you'll either wont get it out and Windows XP crashes or Explorer will crash).

XP and BSOD are a perfect match on my works laptop. Get it at least once a fortnight, and when it goes down, I have a hell of a job getting it back.

Reinstalling, and a new hard drive changed nothing.
