Well, you'll be pleased to know that AtomZ is finally released - whilst it has now be released, there are a few things I'll be adding later on (see the included documentation).

w00t!
I haven't even made the media for my game yet...still coding the level editor

[edit] That's a pretty cool idea! My only suggestions are these.
1) Maybe find some new sounds? those DB ones can get annoying (but mostly only to people like me who've used them so much that they can't stand them anymore )
2) Would be cool if you could play a AI opponent...so you don't have to have somebody else with you when playing...

I was going to say that you should tell the user how to win...but that's because i missed the word document (it's pretty obvious anyway)

Anyway pretty complete for a beta! (ntm how much time you've had since the compo start!)

[edit] BTW how'd you get a custom icon for the .exe?

Its at 1.0.0.1 now - found a small 4 player bug and slightly optimised a multiply used routine.

Yes, its so I can have a month of bug testing, and perhaps add anything thats important.

Quote: "Maybe find some new sounds?"

There is very little thats even remotely suitable - its either not free or has lots of static... I may add a volume control/on/off option in the menu.

Quote: "Would be cool if you could play a AI opponent"

I was thinking of that, but I cant think of how a decent AI system could be implemented... If anyone can think of a decent AI, then I would certainly be interested.

Quote: "BTW how'd you get a custom icon for the .exe?"

Create an icon in Visual Studio, and give it the ID of IDR_MAINFRAME. Unfortunately I cant change the icon in the top-left corner of the window.

The program has been updated :

You can now see the number of special weapons left; the rules have been changed slightly and for those who have a phobia about spheres, you can now use cubes.

The program has been updated to make sure the correct version of DirectX is installed, and prevent execution of the program if its not...

Finally got chance to play it!

Looks good, and I think it has teh potential to be even better. It looks liek you tried to go retro with it, have you though about going over the top instead and adding loads of effects. If every "explosion" or increase in size emitted a handful of particles it would look awesome when you get a big chain reaction.

I would also think about overlapping the "chain reactions" so they happen quicker and give it more tension.

Looks like a good contender!

Well, I did ask for people to think up a decent AI system...

You could use a chess-style AI system. So the difficulty simply controls how many iterations the logic checks for the best move. Easy picks a move at random, hardest precalculates the results of every move to see which has the best outcome. All the other levels fit in between.

I used the "pick a square at random" method for my version, which works fairly well against newbies.

Kinda sucks against people that know how to play.

Cool game, I've never seen this type of game before (original Amiga version or any other remakes).

I agree it would be much better with an AI, but I haven't the foggiest idea how to code one for this type of game, since building up the atoms and timing is everything...tough to judge! It would really kick bootie with 4 players though at the same time.

Good job.

I'm not a real programmer but I play one with DBPro!
