Is it just me or are computer games dieing away while consoles take all the bussines?? Im seeing fewer and fewer computerer games coming out but heaps of console games every month. Could we become an extinct breed the bedroom programmer?? Your thoughts and maybe even a campaign to restore computers to their rightful place.

Nah man, so far the FPS, RTS and so many other PC-pro genre's exist there will always be a market for the PC I can't imagine playing a first person shooter like Unreal tournament or a real time strategy game like age of empires without a mouse and keyboard! Besides a lot of games are multi-platform and get developed for both the consoles and the PC.

Yeah i guess so but it's safe to say that almost everyone into games has at least a personal computer... consoles come and go, computers on the other hand come... then get upgraded.

The bedroom coder is already extinct... almost. There are a few exemplary games that have been released lately that were developed by small teams i.e. Alien Hominid, UpLink, and many others. But yes, the bedroom coder who wants to make a living at it will become an extinct breed, sadly.

@Jeku, don't say that man. were not dead. I predict another coding revolution just around the corner. the tools we use are getting better, the content we produce is getting better, home coding is back and bigger now than its ever been. if it's not, then why are we doing this? why are TGC making the tools? For fun? There are an exceptional few who have the ability to make quality games that are every bit as good as the 'big name brands'. just look at the quality of some work right here. we have Andyman working on his nemesis game, FOG has a couple of great titles under his belt, young Drew Cameron is pumping out the code. and the StrawberryCrush Team look like they have the beginnings of a decent game. If we were all developing for GBA DS GP32 etc with the same amount of talent and determination as we have for PC's then i'm sure at least a few of the members on this forum would have commercial games on the shelves for those handhelds. It's the PC itself that's the problem, it's just became too big a machine to 'do it all yourself' there is no grace period in the pc world when it comes to new hardware. we are expected to kick the ass out of it there and then, and within months something new and better comes along. where as console and handheld developers get a chance to code for hardware that is around in a single state for a lot longer. It's not that we are crap, or that we are a dying breed, we are making games for monster power computers, with a great deal of variety in the hardware configurations. if the PC was a standard piece of kit like the ST and Amiga was (for a time) then the story would be different.

we may fade, but we'll never die out.

grant.

I do think there are fewer games coming out for the PC (and even fewer quality ones) - I believe in a few years the PC will be back where it started : being used just by business and bedroom programmers, with most of the games being developed just for consoles.

It will start to increase when the new consoles come out, unfortunately.

Which begs the question : Will there be fewer computer programmers around (especially if the console owners wont allow homebrew development) ?

Agreed, but have you seen the power of the Ps3? It\'s in-fkn-credible. Besides that it\'s port heaven on that thing.

The PC isn\'t going to go out of style, niether is Consoles. The PC gives you the colmanation of work of millions of nerds over years, creating the standard for interface and customizabilty. Consoles are sleek and clean, more user friendly, and alot simplier to use. Depends on who you are.

If you\'re gonna be sitting in your room all night jamming away at Command n\' conquer, and you wanna hack that bizatch, and have some since of other people, your PC\'s gonna be yer best bud.

If you enjoy the social aspect, consoles are just easier.

ah yeah, the Unreal engine 3 was one of the first things sony demo\'d on thier ps3. Many, many ports. Consoles and PC\'s are probably just going to fuse eventually.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Jeku is right. It's impossible to break into the industry as a bedroom coder in this age.

Well duh for fun. Why else. It's still fun to make your own little games in your spare time even if you won't make it big.

Remind me again what the creator of Pokémon and Nintendogs was before GameFreaks was incorporated?

Sorry but Nintendo have promised to lower thier development costs to allow for more creative people to create games without multi-million dollar budgets.

Microsoft are pushing XNA, Visual C# and .NET all currently free to download so people can develop for all of thier systems. Not to mention the return of thier Incubator program.

Sony are the only ones raising the bar, while sure they're allowing more people in. The hardware costs more than ever, they don't offer a 3rd party solution for the hardward like Nintendo and Microsoft do. (both companies when you sign up as a developer provide you with information on what hardware will give you the similar performance of thier console until you can afford a dev version)

...

From my perspective PC gameing isn't dying but more returning to it's roots, with console games becomming more and more inventive PCs are starting to be reserved for games that play better on the mouse.

MMORPG, RTS, FPS, etc.. I think it's the lack of anything really inventive or breaking the mold that is causing the PC market's games to dwindle.

That said this happpens every what, 5years. Someone questions the PC Market now the new consoles are here and another 5years it plods along with the same-old games.

I think what is needed really are a few companies that can shake up the market. Show that the PC is still a very good development platform.

If we have to look at Uplink as recent to be able to support bedroom coders still existing, then yeah, I think we're extinct

Never have I seen a statement which is more wrong. If you have a good idea, people will want it

slight correction...if you have a good game, people will want it...ideas are a dime a dozen
(though good games do start with good ideas )

Quote: "Show that the PC is still a very good development platform. "

thing about the PC is, it's so bogged down in multi-tasking...PC's have had way more then the power of consoles for a long time (not counting the next gen consoles) yet the consoles still can play all the games that PCs can as good as if not better then them...

because PCs are doing so much freaking multi-tasking!!!

you know playing the sims on the computer versus playing on ps2 gave a clear winner, Computer! I think computers will always own the rts and sim markets, and those are the only games I play (excluding Zelda)

Never, there are bedroom coder's because people find programming fun. As long as people will have there own idea's people will try to make there idea's a reality. While i would agree today's bedroom coder doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of competing with today's commercial mainstream game's on the simple fact that those game's are create by massive team's with almost unlimited fund's. It doesn't mean that the bedroom coder will fade away or can't make a very decent game today, maybe not as visually appealing but certainly just if not even more enjoyable to play.

As for the pc game's fading and console game's taking over i would serriously doubt that also. While the next gen consoles look amazing right now, remember that consoles are updated every 3 to 5 year's where pc's technology is advanced basically every couple month's or at the very least several times a year or so, i feel when the next gen consoles are released they may overpower the market pc at that time, but probablly not for long. (just my opinions )

Yep i agree with what Zone Chicken said, this is what i assume the current console vs. computer developement war looks like:

Yeah, huge steps for the console everytime a next-gen system is developed but where are they going? knowhere 'cus you can' really get more photorealistic than real-life and i'd say where the new consoles are right now are pretty friggin close! That's why on the graph the console steps are becoming shorter and longer.

The computer lags behind every new console launch but still catches up and i'd say they'd probably be in the same position in the future 'cus consoles are becoming more general-purpose these days rather than specifically for gaming, maybe like alternatives to computers even.

I still believe so, yes. The amount of titles built by one man teams that are actually making money are getting fewer and farther between. Of course there will ALWAYS be bedroom programmers, but there will always be home musicians, too. If you plan on making money on a game that you solely create, well good luck. And before you point out games like Star Wraith and 3D Mahjong, we don't know how much they've made in sales. It's one thing to get a publishing deal, but it's another to actually make enough money off it to live.

Don't forget the miracle guys- Reality Engine.

The match is up: Jeku wins again. We are all sitting in our bedrooms, coding games, but are most of us making money off them? No. Probably the most you'll get out of it is a good community rep and something to put on your resume.
