Forgive me if this is a silly question but I don't know much about the inner workings of DBPro, but here goes...

When you Sync rate 0 is this the same as turning the DirectX vertical sync off?

I ask this because in Jedi Knight II there is an option to turn off the vertical sync, which I presume is for DirectX, so I wondered if DBPro does the same thing with Sync rate 0.

If not, then why not include:
DirectX Sync On
DirectX Sync Off

This will give us the ability to include an option to turn the DirectX sync on/off from within our programs, this way we maybe able to get them to run better on low spec systems.

No, sync rate 0 does not turn off vertical syncing. It just stops DBPro limiting your sync rate.

On my laptop, If I don't configure my display settings correctly, I only get 60fps - matching the display refresh rate. If I do configure it correctly, I can get up to 800fps.

That's a good idea of yours BTW. For lower spec systems, the extra half frame could mean the difference between playable and unplayable.

I'm a little surprised that half a frame would make that much of a difference.

But it can. If you remove the 'wait for vsync' that just makes your program sit there doing nothing, you can use that extra time to either get on with the next frame (increasing your framerate) or to include extra processing (increasing functionality).

As IanM said - SYNC RATE 0 will introduce no smoothing delay in the main loop. SYNC RATE 60 will add a small delay to each cycle to produce a screen refresh rate of around 60 fps. The vertical sync option from DirectX is not touched in any instance.

Cheers,

Rich
