A work of advice: if you're not gonna be playing doom 3, I highly suggest a Radeon X800XL because it beats the 6800gt in most games until it gets to about 1600x1200 4x aa and 16x af, but thats still probably a driver error. However, if that 6800gt is already overclocked, then I take my word back.

Good pick on the sound card, and I'm thinking those HDs are gonna be in RAID right? For a power supply, go for a PC Power and Cooling, those are awesome. All in all, sick PC dude, but check out my baby that I'll get in about 2 months:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
1 gig pc 3200 dual channel ddr
2 74 gig Western digital raptors in a RAID array (10,000 rpm ea)
Radeon x850xt
Asus a8n-sli deluxe with nForce 4 sli chipset (might go sli later)
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS gamer
PC Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe

Those are the main performance points and the total will be around $2650 (I'll be using old LCD).

AMD Athlon 64 fx-53, 1 gig PC3200 Dual Channel Performance DDR, ATI Radeon X800 XL PCI-E, 74 gig 10000rpm HD, Abit AX8 Motherboard

acytually, no raid, I'm doing a linux and win dual boot. the only reason I would really see myself needing raid is if the power goes off durhing a installation (hopfully not). the mobo has a built in firewall (sweet!) and could get a really good pc independent one for $100, so viruses and worms not very possible. plus I'm using linux more often hopefully. but I could do raid, the hd costs $70-oem on newegg. just noticed, you have a x2! Holy **** that's freak'n cool, yah good choices there dre. I'll figure out my pcu after I figure how many watts my system uses. too little=no opperation . too much=explosion of fire visible from space .
metel artz: I'm thinking of geting a stanless steel and glass desk (really good looking)

Maybe its just £<->$ conversion here, but your spending $153 on a HD that isn't fantastic (good, but not great)

I highly recommend the Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 (>160GB). Its a parallel ATA, with an 2-8mb (depends on model; specs I've got here aren't very specific) cache. Not sure about speed, but I' pretty sure its a 7200 RPM. Over here, its only £61. (£53 inc. VAT)

(but with exchange rate, that probably racks up to about $100-$150, so my reply may be quite useless)

Note; CPU - get someone from an ICT trade (e.g. My cousin builds PC's a s a living) to buy a CPU for you. They can then get it a trade prices (and if its someone you can trust, you won't be paying extra). My 2.5GHZ AMD Athlon XP cost £55. (yes, that is cheap)

well, my hd is sata, which is better than "pata", my optical drives are going to be on seperate ide chanels. I want the pc to last a wile so the 64 bit atholon +3700 is like a 3.4gh. I wish I could live in the eu, I'm going to england for vacation. PC moding is probably easier to get pc parts .

m8,

wasted cash!!

i'd build 2 rockets for that price. both dual boot. having 2 Great computers is better than having 1 monster, especially when you'r m8's come round for a session. or you need to render some grafix up and your sat twiddling your thumbs waiting, when you could be doing something better with your time on another great pc. VNC them both so as you can monitor and use both machines from each other, even accross operating systems.
2 greats is always better than 1 brilliant.(redundancy??) what do you do when the monster breaks down??.

never trust responce times on LCD's there are too many other factors to take into account and the end result is always MUCH HIGHER in real world scenarios.

AMD64 3700 is NOT 3.4Ghz unless your gonna overclock it to death, it's closer to 2.8Ghz. and the FSB on AMD64 is 1.6Ghz not 800Mhz.

grant.

well, its a 3.4gh 32bit equivilent. the athlon xp +3400
is almost the same as a 3.4gh intel (maximum pc review). the monitore has great reviews, check it out.

forgot to say: my pc is not a monster, its more like slightly older monster, some stuff is new and even more stuff is old. I could probably do raid, but I rather not have linux and win on the same hd. the mobo has 6 sata ports so I could do it.

it's the equivilent of a standard athlon running at a clock speed of 3.4Ghz not an XP3400+ which runs at approx 2.6Ghz. never mind the reviews, have you actually seen what the monitor is like, reviewers don't always get it right you know, You have to look at the thing all day, not the reviewer. you don't have his eye's or his perception of colour, so a good monitor for him may be crap for you. go look at some monitors in a store, then decide. if i had taken the advice of some reviewers instead of checking out the kit for myself, i would have bought some real crap.

PS. it's the sum of the parts used that makes the system, not the individual components themselves. it's a science, an art, ie top end video in a badly designed motherboard and the graphics will be poor on most applications. but it may crunch numerical apps quite the thing and have great disk access. what you want to achieve is a powerfull harmony between all the components, and arrive at a fast stable place where everything ticks as it should.

PS using an non AMD authorised heatsink above the specified weight will invalidate the warranty on the CPU. 64's are supplied with a heatsink and fan, and that's the one the chip maker recommends.

I've read people's reviews from newegg, i'm typing this on a laptop so I am used to lcd. my parent's whant me to get a lcd (no clue why), so if a 12" screen for a ibm thinkpad t21 looks good and plays dvds great, a lcd witch is 5 years newer should be nice. Viewsonic makes great stuff. most 3 screen sets are made by view sonic, plus I read like 10 3ed party reviews of it so I'm convinced. Pcstats convinced me to get the asus k8n-e deluxe. oh, the thing about the amd 64 bit, the analogy I heard was a p5 is a bike with small wheels but at a fast rpm. amd 64 is like a bike with big wheels but at a slower rpm. personally, a 64bit would be better for futer software. I was probably not being truthfull about the equivillents, but as I said I sound like a n00b. I feel like a n00b that is growing out of the n00b room, but at the door to the "non" n00b room. wow, that was corny.
people said doom3 looked great with the monitore. I'm never going to get doom3, but possibly halo, halo is not as advanced in art, so it should run fine. my computer is going to be good, but I'm in the end of the cycle so I'll upgrade the cycle after next probably

Also referred to as PCI-X (in conversation), but PCI-E is correct. Short for PCI extended.

PCI-E

PCI-E = 0
PCI = E
PC = E/I
C = E/I/P
read backwards and without the backslashes:
PIE = C (where the C probably stands for some word like "great" or "awesome" that I'm not aware of)

Motherboard creators are trying to make their products sound more like food.

Consider going with a 939 socket amd cpu because that'll let you use dual channel ram, which doesn't cost more than single channel, but you have to use them in pairs of 2, which means you'll have to get 2 512s and 2 256s, or maybe even better, go with 2 gigs. Just make sure that the cpu has 1 meg of cahce or else it'll perform the same as the single channel system. Also, consider sticking in a few slot fans here and there, especially near vid card gpu so all the hot air that's blown out can be sucked out of the system. By the way, Althlon 64s dominate in gaming, even if it's like 3400+ vs a 3.6 ghz.

there is no way in hell my parents are going to let me get a game like doom 3 so agp graphic cards are fine. the price is not suppost to go over $2200 (usa). dual channel costs too much, and this is during the closing stages of a clock cycle so 939 is being replaced by 940. the slot fan is a good idea. if i buy 939, (I can, just to remind I'm having a linux and window dual boot. so everything has to be linux compatible). I'm deffinetly not old eanough to go to lan parties, but at a computer camp I go to we do it every day (that's how I found out about DarkBasic, sorry everyone, I do c++) playing Star Craft (blizzard). I'm going to upgrade my pc at the clock cycle after next because we are almost at the end as far as I can tell in video and socket mobo. people who have bought this stuff all said it is great with halo thoughs people had slower amds than I am getting but the same sound, video, and chipset as I. to make this make more sense, this pc should be able to play halo and halo 2 fine, but the next pc will play doom 5 as a mark for what I'm building. I'm not bothering with 940 or 939 because in 7 mounths it will be the next cycle ~. but if my mom will alow doom3 it will be a apocolips or I'll upgrade and go crazy with water cooling. that would be cool

Huh??? 939 is WAY better than 940 because it's not limited by registered ram, and 940 isn't replacing 939 in any way, shape, or form . Dual channel ram cost exactly the same as regular ddr, maybe $10 more at the most. Anyways, my parents didn't allow Doom 3 or Half Life 2 or UT series (except my mom, she never spies on what I'm playing), but I didn't care. I just burned them and on the cds I put names of something else, not that my parents dig through my cd cases anyways. All the install files and shortcuts were hidden pretty well in my gigantic pile of game creation. Maybe you should try something like that...maybe you'll get caught, maybe not. Anyways, enjoy your pc.

yah, i'll try. i live in NC and soon it is illegal for people under 17 to get a M game. screw that, amazon.com and I got halo with my audiocard (came today). now, I'm thinking of getting a MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum mobo. it looks ok, don't know if it's linux compatible or not.
does anybody know if the dfi lanpartys are lin compatible?
