there is more gameplay types, mods, and levels than most games of its type.

It is also easy to make mods and maps for it yourself with unrealed. It is fun to play and has great graphics.

What stupid kid said as well as the fact that speed wise it's middle of the road, not too fast for those CS weenies and not too slow for the Quakers. I'm a huge UT fan.

why people like ut:
it is fun to play, you get addicted.
its about killing people to score frags.
science fiction type game
fantasy weapons
awesome maps
really really good graphics
you can create your own mods, characters and maps

the reason i play it:
its the only game where I win, when playing over LAN.

I don't play much, cause the gameplay gets boring quickly.
It's just too quick, but it's controls aren't as fluid as Quake3 making it feel like the action should be slowed down.

Unreal Championship 2 however has the blend almost perfect. No doubt slowed because of control controls not being quick enough for 'mouse look' style movement.

For me it's the cool co-op style deathmatches, like the Assault mode. I loved UT on the dreamcast, 3 players against 3 bots on capture the flag, I could sit and play that all night .

The ripper is my fave FPS weapon of all time, it's great to see it return in UT2. I kinda wish they had'nt bothered with melee though, I still play in first person mode just like I have been as I do the most damage that way, to be expected to switch to melee and do a finishing move in third person (involves a combo button thing) is pretty dumb in a game series that helped shape FPS's. I haven't played on multiplayer yet, I'll probably give it a bash tonight.

I tend to play it mostly with Melee weaponry. It's my specialty though, because you get a lot of cool moves at your disposal plus the players are far more flexible in 3rd person.

People are still falling for wall-kicks atm, leading up to finisher moves. Still it's cool hitting back peoples projectiles before launching in for a quick attack.

The special are often broken by people sitting waiting for you to do them though, so generally you have to be careful where you do them else you'll end up an easy kill.

The first UT was good in single player mode, unfortunately after that, the later versions did get rather boring (especially UT2003), and my sister refuses to play any other version apart from the first one, so I doubt I'll be playing the new one when it comes out.

I like the guided nuclear missile - can have sooo much fun with that...

You know some people like the laid-back flow of Halo.

And even though it's slow paced, it seems much faster when your playing with 16 people and you have warthogs, banshees, and granades raining from the skies.

Agreed, I'd take the lifespan of Halo over both UT2 and TS:FuturePerfect - I mean there's no fun in spawning, then dying because of some spawnkilling git, or a sniper. Especially in FuturePerfect because it's possible to camp for hours sniping people on that ice level.
At least in Halo you can make a hasty retreat and get your health back. It seems more like part of the gameplay in Halo is staying alive, like trying not to be killed; maybe more like FPS games that allow just 1 life (no spawning, like Ameri-Army).

The thing that spoils it for me is all the dude's that are too good at it, it'd be nice to play with people at the same skill level as me, not some 8 year old who can complete the game using only his feet. I know you can do that in Halo, like limit what games you play - however I find that nobody likes to play halo when I'm on, I usually end up in any game that'll have me!.

Just wait for Perfect Dark Zero... mwhahahaa
In it's historical standpoint, the Multiplayer of PDZ had to be one of the key areas providing game types that came before but with some new twists.

Something I enjoy about Unreal, is the frantic nature. Most of the time it is a case of like 32 vs 32 players, and really you can shoot your weapon in any direction and get some good kills.
(Lucky for us who can't hit the broadside of a polygon with even auto-aim )

That just isn't something that has been possible on consoles before, but PDZ is capable of achieving 50 players currently on an alpha engine on alpha hardware. The goal is to reach 64 players, but personally because of the complexity of the maps; they've been built to accomidate almost 128 players.

A major problem faced especially on Unreal with that many people is that the level feels crowded with everyone in there, and is ridiculously empty when it's like 2vs2.
So PDZ again combats this with levels growing and shrinking based on the players currently in play. Levels always feel like they're just the right size giving you the action at any given time.

The idea will be to have small scale wars between the major two corporations in the end, especially with a planned Campaign style mode. Still the more impressive stuff is what has been brought over from PD's original single player.

You get the ability to knock the weapon right from the players hand. While this doesn't seem like much you can from a distance sadistically shoot the weapon from thier hands then toy with them shooting out thier limbs heh

Alternatively say your out of ammo, you remember what Trinity does in The Matrix where she kicks the shotgun from the guys hands over his back then uses it to blow him away? Well you have the ability to do that too.

Players have so much range of motion, that you can roll, dodge, jump, flip, etc. around the world. This can even include your opponent as you can throw them if you get close enough.

Focus for the multiplayer has definately been on fun and enjoyment. Like one weapon cloaks you, another one has an X-Ray mode to see skeletons, another is infra-red to see body heat. Have one which looks like a briefcase, until someone gets too close and then you can switch it back to an Uzi style laser weapon.

The pace in Unreal is too face for the controls.
The pace in Halo is too sluggish at time, especially with all 16 players on-screen.

Not player TS3:FP yet, looking forward to it on my Cube late next month. Got some good stuff to look forward to though.

lol...Never really encountered those problems Van B.

The difference with Halo and the UT is the skill requred. In UT, it's how much health and armor you got + the size and power of your weapon + additional boosts like double damage. People usually run around and shoot at everything that loos like something. A fire fight with 8 people usually results in most dead or maybe 2-3 espcaping by fluke or killing by fluke (like back peddling and poping 5 granades in a row)

Halo is the exact opposite. It all comes down to technique, strategy and your knowledge of the weapons. I've seen a good player take on 5 novice players at once and walk away alive. Halo allows for strategy and retreats, rather than "Kill spawn kill spawn".

Once you learn what weapons are the mose efficiant, you'll easly seperate yourself from the newbies. Alot of people simply refuse to believe the Pistol is the strongest weapon in the game but the truth stings. If you arm yourself with the fuel rod gun + a pistol, the results can be quite funny. One fuel rod takes down thier shields, one shot with pistol brings them down. (Or mix it up for extra fun!)

UT is much more out of control.

My point confirmed

About 6 months ago, at a LAN game I killed all other players (like 12) with a pistol...I died straight after that because I ran out of ammo and they were annoyed but heh...however i suck now

10years ago in the good ol' quake days, I was championship quality.
Ranked 3rd in the UK, and 10th Worldwide.

Problem is when you stop playing, you loose your edge. Not to mention it's no longer about making sure your not a target in a mass of moving bodies, but more about pin-point accuracy to get head-shots. Requires far more practise, time and patience. None of which I have anymore.

I still own at Quake3, and actually oddly put me behind the tactical Americas Army Online.. you've got yourself someone who was chalking up a 10.0 Kill Ratio, mainly because as a team can do some awesome damage and clean out uncoordinate guys with ease.

But the days of me being something of an online presence has really completely gone, and the old master of Shadow, Fragmaster and DFA are long over.

Still it's fun to play, especially just against mates. I mean had the chance to play a few people from here and we're all pretty much as crap as each other at CS. Makes for some fun gameplay.

Still I'm gonna have to learn to stop aiming at people's chests.

Quote: "Ever heard of Tribes?"

When Tribes came out I had a top-notch system (for the time) Athlon 800MHz, 512MB PC133, GeForce 2 GTS 64MB AGP 4X.. yet only a 56K Hardware. While this was more than good enough for games like Day of Defeat, Tribes just died on it's arse with more than 8 people.

What's worse was during the small time we had ISDN 2x (128k), I attempted to play a game with 24players ... and it just crawled. I'm talking my FPS weren't even hitting double figures.

This is on the same computer that happily ran Quake 2 with 50players

While sure these games can *technically* achieve this... just like Counter-Strike / Source can Technically push 64 players; you get above 25 and your FPS suffers horribly. Not to mention your ping slowly deteriorate.

I get around 8ms with 4 players, 20ms with 8 players, 60ms with 16 players, and 190ms with 24 players. In counter-strike, which imo is just pointless against sodding 3mb german/french/netherland players who have like 35ms ping.

PDZ isn't going for being techically impressive as in 'first-to-achieve' status. After-all nothing can beat the Quake 2 record of 230 players over a 100mb LAN, which i bet was just crazy.

What it will promise is that it will be playable, with graphics that surpass basically everyone on the market and due on the market in the next 12months. (it didn't win Best FPS of E3 for nowt, for an ALPHA and limited multiplayer only demo.. lol that's just unheard of)

No it's not. The old Dooms, the Quakes, and Shogo are all definitely faster than UT. UT is fast but it's not so fast that it's too hard for players to react to other people.

The thing that I loved about UT was that strategy was just as important as skill but if you're lacking in one area you can make up for it in another. The skillful use nothing but the lightning gun the strategic use the shock rifle (which is the best weapon in the game IMO). Those who really know the game can kill with any weapon, each one has it's good points as well as their flaws.

Old Doom & Quakes?
I'm not sure how that's possible given gameplay was deliberately slowed down in order to compensate for dial-up speeds at the time.

Doom was set to 350ms refresh
Quake was set to 250ms refresh
Quake 2 was set to 180ms refresh

while the games themselves might appear fast, the fact is that the calls were slowed to compensate for some pretty high pings.

Quake 3 on the other hands is truely fast and frantic.
Actuallly Quake3 and Unreal Tournament (original) were the fastest Multiplayer Games I've played, the rest tend to be relaxed due to damage and such.

Thier levels are designed specifically to stop camping, which also enhanced the speed of gameplay. Due to certain weapons added though, Unreal 2 based games reintroduced camping spots; otherwise the Sniper is pointless to use.

The originals gain thier speed from relying on relative open and small levels. Unlike Half-Life based games that rely more on mazes, and Unreal 2 that rely on huge expanses.

Each FPS seems to have thier own style, and it's not exactly a secret that almost everyone who's been playing online since the Quake 2 days feels that, that is the only real game that had the perfect blend of action and weaponry. (on the PC)

It's not so fast that your playing on luck, and it's not so tactical that it requires years of practise. The weapons on the whole truely had some awesome balance about them, although it was a shame they took away the recoil of the machinegun for Multiplay.

That is something I miss in modern games. The Quake2 Machinegun would recoil upwards meaning you had to have some skill to use it effectively. Would be awesome to have that attribute given to other weaponry.

The old no-strafe-feature Doom is faster then UT? Now there's definatly something wrong with you.

The very first UT online experiance I had was actually with the very first Unreal (Still have the box & cd too ) it was kick-ass on LAN but kinda laggy with many people online. UT was a great shooter on school computers. (Had a big LAN party last year in English while teacher looked the other way)

I actually hate the second and third UT games...ok they do rule but they bring shame to the name that is UT since they change it too much...a graphics revamp with extra features and refined things would have been fine for me...Like the changes to the flak cannon...but they spoilt some weapons (rocket launcher, shock rifle) and the character selection thing sucks

Megaton, Hold for the three rockets then bash fire while they're in flight and the split into 6 drunken rockets.

I'm getting annoyed at the sparseness of ammo, it's like you can kill 2 people before your back to pistols or melee .

Bah, you people are too whinny. So the rocket launcher only launches 3 projectiles instead of 5. Now they go out spinning in a triangle formation making it more likely for 2 or 3 to land on a target, with the old 5 projectiles you'd probably land 1 rocket, unless there was a bunch of clowns trying to catch them. The flack cannon looks different but it still does the same thing (I love that weapon). They made other weapons better (the pistols for example, now shoot grenades. The googun now shoots faster, I think... or is it just me?)
Besides, when you play with the original Unreal you will notice it changed a whole lot in UT. The ripper used to be a cool organic thingy for example. The machine gun used to have two modes (normal and shot gun). So UT brings shame to the original Unreal?
