Just an update...

I received my CPAP machine two days ago to treat my Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), and it is working wonders. I feel like a completely different person. I am no longer chronically fatigued. I still have a way to go, but things look like they will only get better. I'm still paying off my sleep debt, due to many years of not actually getting rest or REM sleep. But it is quite amazing how quickly the body will respond and begin to heal itself.

I am very happy to say the least.

Maybe now I will be able to finish my projects

Yayyyyy!!!!!

Wow.

I didn't know you had this problem but glad you're improving. Did the computer do this to you?!

@Megaton Cat,

Funny that you ask that. I work as a Network Systems Admin, and one of my co-workers in my department is also suffering the same problem. Kind of makes you wonder. (I have worked there for six years, he has been there for nine years)

His doctor recommended the surgery route. So after having "deviated septum" and "nasal-passage widening" surgery(Ouchhh!), Uvula and Adenoids removed (double ouch!!!), Palett scrape and tonsils removed (triple Oucchh!); 1 month out of work... he has seen no improvement.

Yet myself, no surgery, and my "Darth Vader" breathing machine, and I feel 100x's better after 2 days with it.

I told him he should see a different doctor before they cut anything else off him.

I have to get batteries for my flashpath floppy today, so I'll post the actual pics later. But for now here are the pics for the unit and headgear.

Here is the CPAP+ Heated Humidifier Combo Unit

And here is my mask interface...

I can't wait to put up the actual picture. I look absolutely ridiculous!!!

here is another pic of someone wearing the headgear. Looks a little bit like Hannibal Lector...

I only need to wear it while sleeping. But it does give you a lift just relaxing and breathing from it. it has a multiple carbon filters, and a heated humidifier. It's basically oxygen therapy.

What it does is...

I have a prescritpion for a certain air pressure (mine is 14cm). The air flow through the masks keeps my airway open, and prevents it from collapsing. Due to my anatomy; when I try to sleep without the unit, I tend to snore loudly. At a certain point during sleep my airway becomes obstructed by relaxed tissue at the back of my throat, an oversized uvula (that punching bag looking thing at the back of your mouth [not vulva!!!]), and my tongue falls back into my airway essentially suffocating me.

Add to this that I tend to mouth breathe because it is difficult for me to get enough air in naturally through my nose.

So while I attempt to sleep, I either stop breathing for a period of time, and then my brain awakens my body to gasp for air to open the airway (apnea). Or I just begin to breathe very shallow (hypopnea). This results in my oxygen saturation in my bllod to drop to unhealthy levels. (normal is 98-100% saturation) during my sleep my oxygen saturation went down to 78%.

So without the machine, I never enter restful sleep aka REM sleep. And I suffer oxygen deprivation all night long. Thus, I would wake up every morning tired; as if I never went to sleep. I would also feel like I had a hangover for most of the day. It didn't matter how many hours I slept, I would feel just as tired as not sleeping.

With the machine, I wake up now at 6:00am naturally, and feel well rested. I can breathe easier, and life is so much more pleasant.
=======

The machine itself is very quiet. When I breath in the air rushes in helping me, and when I breath out the air releases through a filter in the mask, hence it sounds a little like Darth Vader.

My machine is a (CPAP) Continuos Positive Airway Pressure. So I am breathing out my nose against the incoming pressure, which take a little while getting used to. For people who can't get comfortable with it they also have autosensing Bipap machines.

Becuase of the continous air flow, my mouth stays closed naturally and my tongue stays foward. I can force my mouth open and it feels weird, as the froced air just goes through my nose and straight out my mouth.
I can make some freakish sounds.

Ah that sucks.

I used to have allergies that completly clogged up my nostrils and prevented me from sleeping every night. (I no longer have this ofcourse) So I know exactly how you feel.

How much longer do you have to use this for?

I will have to use it for the rest of my life.

There are surgery options, but they are not as successful in treating my type of apnea as the device is. Once you get used to it, it hardly bothers you from what I have read. It's kind of comforting, at least for me. I breather easier and feel 100x's better.

just note:
I had been suffering with chronic fatigue for over 10 years. It has greatly affected my life. From being diagnosed with depression, Adult ADD. I have been on so many different meds to treat depression, anxiety, ADD, including stimulants; all of which had some side effects. All the while I never felt all taht good. it treated some of the symptoms bet even while on anphetamines (adderall, concerta); I was constantly tired and groggy. It has impacted my social life, financial state, nevermind the emotional drain of not knowing what was wrong with me. I even had to take college coursed 2-3 times because of dropping them to to my numerous absences while feeling ill. I have lost friends, and even a fiancee due to my health.

I am now almost completely weened off all meds, and I feel better than I can ever remember. It's truly been a long journey. I just wished that the doctors could have picked up on this sooner. I had been complaining of chronic fatigue from day 1. They just assumed, and convinced me, that I was depressed. Not being able to get sleep can cause so many symptoms, and I do believe that all the anxiety, stress, depression was a direct reslult of the apnea.

The future does look bright now! And I can finally live my life to the fullest, rather than just going through the motions.

By the way, I only found this out because through my constant search for an answer I happened across the right doctor who looked at my entire history and thought "hmmmm... something isn't right here. You are exhibitng symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADD, chronic fatigue; but I think that there is something causing this. He recommended the sleep study that uncovered the mystery."

I didn't know I has apnea. Most of the time I wouldn't remember waking up. I just knew I snored loud. I even tried sprays to supress the snoring.

It just goes to show you that not only should you seek 2nd oppinions with regard to your healthcare; but continue pursuing answers if you are not satisified. I must have seen 12 different doctors, counselors, psychiatrists, before anyone even suggested apnea. All of my bloodwork always came back normal. I believe that some of the doctors actually believed I was making up how tired I felt. Or, they just increased other medications.

hmm interesting... i'll see what people think of the boat im in. might be similar.

ever since about summer 2003 i've never had a day where i've had a decent day's worth of energy. christmas 03 i had a christmas job and i struggled to do it, like i went in on friday 12-5, sat 9-5, sun 10-4. on the saturday afternoon i would be completly tired and almost walking about like a zombie. it usually took me about 2 days to almost recover my energy levels. i've been going back and forth to my doctor finding out why im always tired. even going to the point of changing doctor since he didnt believe me, blamed it on "depression". to this day i still dont have enough energy to do a full time job. i can barely do a day's work but it's the next day i still feel the same as the last day. anyway to sort of end the story, the new doctor referred me to a sleep test which i gotta do next month.

zenassem im on the irc chat if you wanna pop in and talk to me. im been trying to find out whats wrong with me for nearly 2 years. maybe you can sort of help me figure whats wrong

All interesting stuff. I also thought this post was about CRAP computers - much like mine before I reformatted and reinstalled.

That's really interesting to hear about. It's funny how something as simple as a slightly different air way / respitory system can so severely screw you over.

I have a similar problem though - it's called my girlfriends hair. Many a night I wake up choking to death with a lock of her evil strands slipping into my throat. Even when I religate her to the other side of the bed, she still ends up snuggled up to me with her foul head of hair mercilessly trying to gain access to any respitory pathway.

Does your vader machine filter out smothering hair?
