Hi, as some of us here are a little on the young side to have played many of the golden oldies of games I think we should have a thread where people can just describe briefly an old retro game that they used to like - one that they are not making themself of course. If people want more info they can research that game then. Just details like name, title, genre, description - just a few lines then.
NOBODY has a forum name as stupid as Darth Shader. I do.

I'll bite on this one... any that I could list would be
actual arcade games.

Name: Battle Zone
Genre: ????
Description:

The player had a crosshair on the screen with two
controllers side by side. Push both up to go forward, pull
both back to move backward. The entire scene was just wire
frames. Mountains in the background were just wires. Tanks
were modeled as wires and everything was green. The whole
purpose to the game was to kill enemy tanks.

============================================================

Game: Moon Patrol
Genre: ???
Description:

A 2d side scroller. The player had a moon buggy that
fired both vertically and forward. The idea was to destroy
enemy ships, avoid the pits which would be jumped over, and
destroy the boulders in your path or jump them. The terrain
was designed to look like a lunar terrain. Very fun game
that took a little skill

I loved moon patrol. I used to play it on my Commodore 64! LOL.

Just a point I'd like to bring up--This thread probably won't get too many posts because everyone (like me) who is trying to make a retro game will be wary of giving away ideas.

How about a "Speak and Spell" clone for Dr Occult?

I was thinking of doing one of the following.

Bubble Bobble in 3d
Spy vs Spy in 3d
Bomberman in 3d (not really retro but is an old classic)
a generic space scrolling shoot em up
a generic side scrolling platformer in 3d

At the moment I'm edging towards the 3d platformer but I need to base it on something. I'll have another look through my old c64 games later.

Bomberman is defintely retro! It comes from HudsonSoft who originally released it on the MSX 8-bit computer as "Eric and the Floaters" (European title) - I used to play it for hours on end I will definitely let it through.

Rich

I've already started bomberman and bubble bobble games I don't mind if any1 else does it tho, all my games are gonna b very simple remakes, with just a few levels and 3d graphics but the standard 2d gameplay... I'm making a compilation of a few in an arcade

I LOOOOOVE Outrun. In fact I actually bought and reconditioned an old Outrun machine I'm not sure exactly how a 3d version would work, but I'm thinking about it...

Good luck to every1 on these projects, I hope no1 thinks I'm in competition with them if I have similar elements in my game, its gonna be more like a simple compilation of a few ideas, I'm sure their full versions will be better than mine individually

Coming Soon! Kangaroo2 Studio... wait and quiver with anticipation! lol

I was thinking about creating a Bubble Bobble Game, but now I'm restricted to the 'second version' of it. I'm sure you know what that is...

Hexgear, is it Pong then?

How about Chucky Egg - you go around a 2D screen climbing ladders and platforms collecting eggs while being chased by overgrown chickens that kill you the moment they touch you. As levels get harder more chickens appear and the really hard levels have a giant chicken flying around that can fly through platforms and ladders so you just gotta run for your life while still managing to collect all the egs.

But the ultimate game in my all time greats has to be Exile - i never actually met anyone else who played it but it was a fantastic game - truly ground breaking with such an exiting environment to explore.I could not even come close to doing this game justice so go visit this site...
http://exile.acornarcade.com/package.html

If someone were to make this game I would be ecstatic - I'd do it myself but I'm not worthy to undertake such a godly task!

Anyone remember the good old "Peter Gun"?
If you do, plz tell me if it will go through.

And what about the good old Amiga classics, like "Chuck Rock" or "Dick Dangerous".

wow, that game's as retro as you can go! anyways the game i'm making has been around for sometime now, i'll give you guys some clues:

- created in 1987.
- spawned a feature film and cartoon series in 1993.
- was overthrown in the early 90's by street fighter and mortal kombat.

you might be able to figure it out now

Erm I think that was "Rick Dangerous".

I remember when it first came out - it was so hard they re-released a newer version shortly after it!

hexgear - the only game I can think of that a film came from in 93 was Double Dragon. It was created around 87 too so that would tie-up and Street Fighter was far better than it I did love the ending though - if you played in 2 player mode and got to the end the final fight was against each other to see who got to take the girl home! Classic

Cheers,

Rich

Here's a great site that seems to have mostly spectrum games. I've just come across some great games that I totaly forgot about. I've changed my mind again and I'm going to do a 3D Bubble Bobble instead of Bomberman. I think it will be easier to get done in the given time. Here's that site but there's probably 100's out there.

You know, I have noticed that it would not be easy to convert a 2D game into a 3D one. Now, remember I said, "not EASY",and not "Impossible". Hmm...sentence a little confusing...oh well. Anyway, my game is going to be hard to 'port', if that's the word to use, but I will figure out something.

On, and another thing: I'd like to see someone recreate my favorite Atari game of all time I believe it was called...Solaris? Solarus? Something like that. You know, the one where you pilot a spacw ship and can travel to different plannets to pick up gas, and if you blow up the gas satation, you cause chaos on the planet and have to warp out? I jest loved that effect. The game was a little hard back in the day, but, I can beat it now (I still have my Atari)

Don't forget about...

Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong JR
Tempest
Dig Dug
Tron
Rampage
Phoenix
Galaga
Racer X (kind of obscure)

Does anybody remember the motorcylce jumping game that was in black & white?
It had three tubes that were painted on the screen, and only the motorcylce and the buses that you jumped were video.
Now that one is OLD!!!

Their is one more that pops into my head...
But that one is mine and I have already started it.

I think my fav of the Atari era was Kaboom. You try to block bombs being dropped by a bad guy. Very simple concept but it gets FAST. My best is level 5. I love that game.

Am I a butterfly dreaming I'm a man?

I think there was both a game called "Rick Dangerous" and "Dick Dangerous". The gameplay was almost exactly the same.

An incredibly fast futuristic racing game, taking place at speeds between 400 and 1200 kph depending on which game you play. It has appeared on the Snes, N64 and Gameboy Advance. There are no weapons, but the sheer speed and the fact that there are hardly any barriers on a track miles up in the sky mean you can barge other people off the track if you are skilled enough, hee hee. The Snes and GBA verisons use Mode 7 rotating graphics, but the N64 version uses full 3D, and is better than WipEoUt, I reckon.

Yes, I know F-Zero. Would it be better to program a 3D version of F-Zero based on the Snes original, or better to program Mode 7 rotating graphics because of the 'retroness' of them?

Flux - yeah I know the game you're on about (spelt Solaris) came out on the 2600 back in 86. Would make for a good conversion.

I heard somebody was redoing Paradroid! Now there's a game!

Me I'm doing berzerk (I already did a straight copy version) but now I wanna do a 3/4 view 3-d version.

Anybody remember Front Line? How about Ikari Warriors? I might change my mind and do something like that.

My brother and I have no concerns about our ideas being copied - copy away just remember who got there first

We've finished our game and we are releasing our entry on our webpage on Sunday/Monday - or as soon as the beta testers give us the thumbs up

Two months left you say? We might have to write another one...

A really weird retor game was "Rockstar ate my Hamster" a kind of text based Pop management simulator for the Speccy, C64 and eventually Amiga by Codies when they were good On playing it recently on Emulation, I wonder why I didn't notice the "Your band only reached number 20, Why don't you sl*sh your wr*sts?" type messages and sexual song titles such has "sh*ft me backwards" lmao the ignorance of a child. (I put in the stars to protect any innocent eyes out there lol)

xtom - "Fernandez Must Die" - that was awesome, a complete Jackal rip off but a good one.

Kanga - Rockstar was fantastic I'd play that for hours. I remember the scandal when it came out because of the Sam Fox "boobs" pic in the game!

petrat - yeah I remember Spherical for the ST, great music, also Kid GP but that wasn't so great See my website http://www.atari.st and you'll find both of them.

Horace goes skiiing was just a bad frogger clone

Yes the Horrace games were quite popular in the spectrum days, I believe horrace goes skiing was just one of them.. I never had a spectrum so can't confirm, one of my bro's favourite games was Beach Head a tank game based around a beach or 2 believe it or not!, also aswell as mario there's the Giana Sisters, I believe this was out before mario but either way they are one in the same thing really, I wouldn't suggest doing any old Microsoft electron games they were the worst ones ever!!

Seems as someone here mentioned my game I will confirm I am doing chuckie egg, one of my favourite games of old, I had toyed with a castle destroying game found on the original philips consol (out with the first atari) which involved having 2 players with a catle each, and each player would take it in turns to lobb stones with a catapolt at the others castle but my maths is so poor I had to forget that(tragic isn't it)..

There really are so many retro games it would be worth while searching retro on the search engines for anyone not knowing what to do, or is not old enough to know what the retro games were.
