Will an object cast a shadow on it's self.
Will a .X object cast a shadow.
Can on object cast a shadow onto a .X object.

These are the questions i have, because i have a sphere moving around a .X object, but the light still appears on the sphere through the object.

Use SET OBJECT so the sphere is/isnt effected by light.

If you are talking about the complex shadows activated by
"Turn shadow shading on <object number>"
then the answers are
q: Will an object cast a shadow on it's self.
A: yes

q:Will a .X object cast a shadow.
a: yes

q: Can on object cast a shadow onto a .X object.
a: yes

Nice and simple !

now that someone has brought up the subject, instead of opening DBP and finding out for myself because I want to go to bed soon, and tomorrow I will be revising and will have spare time to check my messeges not play about with DBP.

Will alpha maps cast realistic shadows like in a Cinema 4D render, or just cast shadows of the object its self rather than detect transparentcy(like in a trueSpace render)?
