Can anyone suggest to me a good way to buy either 3ds Max v5 or v6? I realise that v7 is the latest version but I can't afford the billion pound price tag (slight exaggeration).

I've tried looking on Ebay but no joy. Also PCWorld understandably does not sell 3ds at all.

You're not the only one who has tried mate, looked all over the place, no luck, my advice is email the dudes who make it discreet.com something along the lines of that, maybe they have a few left in their warehouse, if they do, tell me, gimme the price, if good enough, I'll do the same

Well certain Software warehouses DO sell old copies. One of my friends bought 2nd hand v4 for a low price. If you have it in your country, try StormFX, they sell all the maddest 3d software.

Get a student version, not for commercial use, but hey - if your game DOES go commercial, then you should have the funds to pay for it

and if it doesn't go commercial then they won't come knocking at your door

if you go for the student version get version 7 and get yourself a subscription - it's cheaper in the long run

Student prices:
http://www.studica.com/Discreet/

Tried a quick google and couldn't find any deals cheaper than what Discreet sells Max for.

Best bet is definitly to go with an Academic version, and then upgrade when you go commercial.

I think I'll stop at the point of saying "bollocks to it all".

A nifty trick I picked up from a friend, is that you go searching for people trying to get rid of really old versions, that noone wants to buy...
Grab that up at 1/100th of its original price, then simply pay for the update price to get the latest version...

Not sure how much it'll save you with 3DSMax, but I know with Cinema4D, my mate got it for basically half the price... Full version, and everything

Jess.

Max it's the same price, but for Softimage|XSI it generally means a very small update fee; and Maya your looking at around 1/2 price (which is still quite a fair wack)

Well, 95% Of the users here with 3DS Max / Maya / Lightwave / Photoshop have them pirated, but yes, there are the few exceptions.

My copy of Max4 died on me (corrupted .dll I think - can't really trace it) - and I've no idea where my installation disks got to.

So I aquired version 3 and that suits me down to the ground for what I need - I found that things are laid out in a friendlier fashion in v3 and I can see that it would be pretty good for learning Max. I suggest getting an old version and familiarising yourself with it before trying v5+.

Recently that would've been worth it given the subscription is $1,200 per year and they've been releasing one per year. So rather than $3,200 you can get it quite a bit cheaper.

This said, given that I work with these programs professionally and find it very hard to constantly keep up with the latest releases, it is far beyond suspicious that even some let alone any users here would be able to afford every version.

Sorry but 4/5/6/7 your looking at $15,000 over the last 5years.. it might not seem like much but for a hobby; and I'd have to say someone is full of crap. Particularly if someone was to say they bought it in Europe where the cost of such programs is extorionally high with no Student verion program.

Van, they took it out of V5 (why is beyond me) . but if you press 'Y' you can bring up the Quick Tab System
It's particularly useful for editing, atleast that's what I find.

I've found a site where they sell 3dsmax 6 for 130$ only.
http://www.obscureware.com/product_details.php?product=2071

taken from the FAQ:
Quote: "Why is the software so inexpensive?
We offer the software for downloading only, it means that you do not receive a fancy package, a printed manual and license that actually aggregate the largest part of the retail price. In this situation we are restricted in selling the products for private purposes only! You will not be able to get a technical support and different rebates from the manufacturer. Updates are available for the most of our products (you may ask our support staff for the exceptions) that make them fully functional and operating. Additionally you save the delivery cost.
"

Seems very suspicious though, you'd better ask discreet if that stuff is legal or not.

Key thing to point out is the first sentence...

So what they're selling you is the Trial version that is offered for free on the website. This is in-fact ILLEGAL, as you may not resell software for personal profit; even if you do put it on to a CD with a nice label.

without a License you can't legally use it either, this goes for even free.

Try buying pirated cds for about $6 only!!! just joking... Most cds like those doesn't work (90% not; 10% works, and if it works, one little scratch will make it unusable already), so i still prefer the originals, even if it makes a big hole on my pocket.

How about:

-Softimage XSI for 500USD.Excellent for HL2 Mod

-Modo for 300 against your Lightwave dongle and 600 without..Prices will raise after Siggraph.(after the Realtime GI renderer will be revealed)

-Wings3D and/or Blender for FREE

3D Studio Max runs on a 10 years old code and as stated previously,is not quite cheap.

We shouldnt offer him differnt programs hes smart enough to know which he likes you just wants to know how to save money out of the choices he gave us. So know one should say anything about other software.

I'd say go arounding looking at PLEs and demos of 3D programs, use em each for 3 weeks then pick the one you love the most, I liked Anim8or, good to start with, to me it beat milkshape and wings, never heard of blender at the time, next I chose between TrueSpace, old version of Cinema 4D and a bundle of 3D apps like Silo and Zbrush, I bought trueSpace and Cinema 4D and tried the demos of the others, chose Cinema 4D and now I am Picking C4D XL9 over 3DS max, Maya (the cheaper one) and the Cheap houdini and XSI.

So pick the best 3D app for you. Sorry for the speech
