I bought A5 Com, hate it, so I bought DBP!

Heres my problem, I have a FPS pre made with A5.

Is there a way to get my lvls out of A5 and into DBP?

I know I can import lvls in to MED, and export via .3DS, but it turns everything black!

Thanks For any Thoughts,

Hmmm... Your talking about a model or a level or something like that right? That aint the game, you have to write the game yourself.

It's been a while since I last met MED. I remember that I could display an exported 3DS file in a modeller (I think it was Amapi) including textures...

He's talking about a level that he wants to import in DBpro.
He doesn't want to import a game

U know... I don't like A5 either. But I love the level editor of them... I would also be glad if I could import it .

Sorry, I misunderstood it a little... Isn't A5 one of those RAD tools, like Click'n'Play (but 3D), or am I just stupid?

Yeah it's a RAD tool, but not (nessecarily) Click'n'Play. It has an advanced (and badly documented) script engine.
Their world editor (WED, has CSG and portal rendering capabilities) and their model editor (MED) are quite good actually.

Can some 1 please tell me what RAD stands for? Thanks

Is A5 the same as 3d Game Studio? I used the Demo of that, I liked the Level editor, but the C scripting was confusing and badly documented

Coming Soon! Kangaroo2 Studio... wait and quiver with anticipation! lol

Koguchi - I don't think so (about converting the levels) but I've never used A5 so I'm not 100% sure. It seems likely to me though that they would use a proprietary level format.

Kanga - RAD = Rapid Application Development. It comes from the business software world but I guess applies to games too. Some might consider DBPro a RAD tool in comparison to say C++. A5 is indeed GameStudio.

.wmp format? Unless I'm wrong I'd say that's their own format - it's not one I've heard of before anyway. Could you send me a few sample wmp files please? ([email protected]) you never know - we might be able to write a convertor for them. For now though you need to create your maps in BSP format in order for DBPro to read them. You could use an editor like Hammer/Quark/Cartography Shop and then compile them with the BSP tool we provide with DBPro.

Cheers,

Rich

That would be so kewl and on top of the world Rich!
Even if it can not be done, I think it is awsome that you offered. On A5, you (the users)have to make a .DLL and GIVE it to 3D Game Studio! Or pay them to make a import .dll
Over at 3D RAD, if you mention another "competitors" name, they ban you, even if you bought there software! And the people over at Click& Play, they wont have anything to do with it, just tell you "If you like it so much, go use it".
Pie in the Sky, they don't even upgrade!

So just to have you say, that you are willing to help and try to look into this for us, means a great deal to me and I am sure to others!

THANK YOU!

Actually the final bsp tree is in .wmb format which is highly optimized for the a5 engine. But the map files i.e. .wmp and .$$m are in the ACKNEX format. There is a file converter for the map file, but it would be much nicer to use the .wmb files, cause this compilation is so nice compared to trying to make levels in worldcraft.

Koguchi - I have your emails and have sent the files to the rest of the DBS team, we'll look at them and take a view on what can be done.

Cheers,

Rich

Send me whatever files are needed - other than the compiled BSP ones because once they hit that stage their virtually useless to us.

Just curious OneTouch, what version of 3d game studio do you have and what do you dislike about the software besides the documentation and the community and the company?

I have v5.51 Com!
You listed about all the reasons. But here are a few more!

1) The tech support sucked
2) If you wanted anything from them you had to pay $$$$$$$.
3) Most important, I bought my copy from someone on the net. After he sold it to me and it was verified by Conitec (*A5) they (Conitec) sent me a recipt. They transfer license and ownership to me. About 3 months later this person put a copied version that he sent to me, up on the net for sale. He sold a warez copy to other people. Conitec was informed and decided to cancel my license, and made it to ware I can not use A5 legaly. I don't know why, since I knew nothing of the other sales. They are just jerks over there. I still have the recipt and I may scan it in and post it on my site for everyone to see it.

Do that, scan and put on ur site I'm soon doing the same with amazon.com who ate my money and my books. Sadly I cannot hack their site, or I should redirect to mine when it's done... but one day I will learn, and they will pay... I promise ::::::

I cant dis Conitec that much they where ok to me, I also found the forums very usufull but for me it got to that stage where the engine is too limited and you have to move on, besides I wanted to get down to working on my own engine as I feel it is more rewarding.

I heard A5 is limiting, although i havent used it that extensively. only got the demo, and was quite impressed with it from a laymans point of view.

Downloaded demo of commercial games made with, and I can say the quality of the games made it wid are good.

We havent seen a commercial game made wid DB pro. I know its coming, but as the developement goes on, bugs surfaces here and there.

Or im mistaken, there are already games on the market made with db pro?

Doesn't A5 save as a .map file?

Wow...another Leicester fan on the forums...'Blue Army'

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.

I've also used A5 and I'd love to be able to keep using their level editor. If anyone finds a way to load those levels into DBPro, I'd seriously consider buying DBPro.
