What an absolutely brilliant line.

YES!

Following the ratings smash of the first season of the new Doctor Who, the BBC has just commissioned a THIRD season, even before they've begun making the second season.

In other news:

1. the Cybermen are back for the second season (hurrah!)
2. the Doctor regenerates at the end of this Saturday's episode.

Looks like the BBC are finally noticing science fiction programs...

Quote: "1. the Cybermen are back for the second season (hurrah!)"

Said that before, in a 2 part episode, possibly called 'The Satan Pit'

Quote: " the Doctor regenerates at the end of this Saturday's episode."

Should be interesting to see how its handled.

Indeed

Anyone know if the title sequence will be changed ?

The second series is going to be split into 3 multi-part stories, but still have one overall story.

So it's likely that we'll be seeing these bad guys with more back-story.. hopefully introducing them like the Daleks.

Something that gets me about Doctor Who is the Seasons are so short.
I mean 13 Episodes, for most Series nowadays this would be called a Mini-Series as it's like half of a standard Series.

Would be nice if they actually took this up properly though, with a real budget and started getting them to push it like Stargate or Star Trek.

It's a shame that the current season of Enterprise is the last one too.. I mean 3 Seasons while that's about equal to the original; nowadays just seems far to short.

Yeah, I saw that.

He hates being attached to Doctor Who, as he feels it is typecasting etc... yet they were calling him The Doctor - he was getting mildly annoyed, but trying to take it in good mirth.

He's not daft, he knows he should be in movies with Nick Cage and Vinny and suchlike. Who can blame him, I mean they made Billy his assistant FFS.

British seasons are always short - usually due to money and lack thereof.

What exactly is wrong with Billie Piper?
While he might feel like he is going to get type-cast, the fact is that the movies Eccelston has been in; he has already been type-cast as 'The Bad Guy'.. that's all he ever seems to bloody play.

For once he is actually playing a good guy, and getting far far more recognition as well as also finally being a central character rather than a plot point.

Whether he likes it or not, he is now typecast by most minds by even accepting and doing a single series. I don't see how it would hurt his acting carrer given he has needed a project that gets enough exposure to show he does have more range than just 'a**hole'.

This is amazing. For once I agree with Raven: Billy Piper can act. Her acting in this series has been fine.

I agree with the comments on Christopher Eccleston. If you accept such an iconic role as The Doctor, by definition you must accept everything that comes with it. You are already typecast and always will be. I remain deeply unimpressed that he has left after only one season.

This is of course also partially a BBC error. Their contracting staff should have ensured they had an option on him for further seasons. I hope this mistake has not been duplicated with Tennant.

ya, definately one hell of an awesome final episode!
didn't get to see much of the new Doctor though, though the short few seconds you do see looks like he'll be interesting.

there was quite alot of information throughout the entire episode but one thing still confuses me..

why did she pick the words 'Bad Wolf'?

I trust that Rose also brought Lynda with a Y back to life again.

It was a very good episode - have to see what Tennants like in the Christmas episode...

Its certainly nice to have Doctor Who back - if the BBC had put in as much commitement now as they had when it started (or from McCoy's era), it wouldn't need to have been cancelled in the first place. Hopefully they've now learnt their lesson, and will perhaps put more effort into science fiction programs and films.

Now, I'm waiting for the second part of the first series of Captain Scarlet.

Brilliant. Absolutly bloody brilliant. David Tennant looks like a doctor but we'll have to wait and see if he acts like one. He is a good actor though so he should be good.

The McCoy era was bad imo.. the late 80s were part of the reason it stopped. It'd become just explosions and special effects; while sure they'd always been present they subtituted these for storylines. hoping that the classic characters would revive the dropping ratings.

The new series seems to be in a very definate direction and everyone involved got better as it went on. I definately look forward to the future of it.

Although I did have my reservations about it's Saturday Night timeslot, I realised last nite that it was pretty perfect.
Given it fit in with my TV viewing schedual even against the Sky/Cable channels. Not many of the Terrestrial ever think about the clashes other than with the other Terrestrials.. so it's good to be able to watch Enterprise, Andromida then Dr Who.

Definately a stunning return for the Doctor to our screens ^_^

The only reason the McCoy era was slightly iffy was due to lack of support and money - I think no-one really wanted it to continue (got bored with it for some reason). If there had been money, especially for the special effects it could have continued.

lol that's my point Nick.. it was bad because the storylines just sucked and they tried getting more interest via old loved enemies (ie Dalek, Cybermen, etc.) then having everything blow up and be a special effect.

meh, I never liked his series; I liked the 3 Doctors before it though.

I liked his series - Ace could get annoying at times though.
McCoy's Doctor had a pretty ruthless streak in him, which was revived by Christopher's one - its nice to see the 'hero' isn't a Saint...

Great episode, was impressed with both the storyline and acting. It was a great finale to a season, although it doesnt quite rival Best Of Both Worlds from Star Trek TNG.

It'll be interesting to see the new doctor and how he is, i'm hoping he isn't just a carbon copy of Chris Ecclestones Doctor, so the actor can make the role his own. I'm looking forward to the Christmas Special on this year, and i'll definately be investing in the Season 1 Boxset.

I'm guessing those lines were written for him so perchance the sense of humour is the scriptwriter's?

I get terribly upset when people criticise McCoy's Doctor. Apart from the first season and a half, where the scripts were awful, McCoy's Doctor was brilliant. For the record Sylvester himself complained bitterly to the BBC about the scripts during the period (anybody remember the Liquorice Allsort man? Honestly!) as he wanted to play a dark and mysterious Doctor with a ruthless streak.

He eventually got his way. The 1988 season was one of the best ever. It had at least two classic serials: "Remembrance" and "Silver Nemesis" as well as some really good serials: "Survival" and "Battlefield".

1988 saw viewing figures go back up again, but by then it was too late.

Sylvester McCoy should not be underrated. He did a far better job than Colin Baker.

Ace: "Who could possibly want to kill us?"
The Doctor: "Ha! There are an infinite number of possibilities".

I dont think Colin was liked much by Michael Grade - he was talking about his time in Doctor Who in our local newspaper (he's appearing in theatre here), and he was essential saying they wanted to quickly get rid of him.

Colin did start the ruthless streak in the Doctor (excluding the initial attacks on Peri after the regeneration), which is something that he should be acclaimed for.

I do hope Russel Davis does introduce problems with the regeneration (instability, memory loss etc)

perhaps.. that said by the 90s when the latter half of the McCoy series was being aired it'd stopped being watched by my family.

personally wasn't to bummed about it, they used to have it on strange days and when your just trying to make new friends in secondary school; your generally out more, so TV took a backseat.

Changing days that a program is aired usually brings about the downfall of any program - unfortunately it happened to Dr Who and Enterprise as well.

Channel 4 keep changing when its aired too, which is rather annoying...

SkyOne are able to change the days without much damage to the viewing figures.

Enterprise, Stargate, etc.. each move around the schedual. Although for a while there (unil Season 6) I thought that 8pm Wednesday was like reserved for Stargate. So I don't think moving them around does them as much harm as trying to alienate the fan-base.

That is what Doctor Who did though, by the time they realised this.. it was far too late.

Hopefully the BBC have now learnt their lesson, although even though they may have stacks of money, they still need partners to make it...

I think it would be better if they changed the transmission date to a weekday - either Tuesday or Wednesday, preferably.
