Hi!!

Me and my friend tried to visit the Blitz3D community. And i hate to say this. But in my eyes the Blitz3D community had way better projects then anything on this community(Please don't take this personal). And then i have thought ALOT about the classic question. "Is blitz3D better than Dbpro?". Maybe that's true or else they just have better programmers:S.

Please don't flame me:0 i just wanna know if Blitz3D really is better. And we can get a discussion about it

I also wanna know if blitz3D can handle more objects on the screen have a faster fps than darkbasic pro. Not because i don't like darkbasic pro.. I LOVE darkbasic pro. But what if Blitz3D actually is better....

It's a good enough thread Mod's; I'd like to see you keep it open for a while because it raises an interesting question - if DB is better, where are the games to show it?

My Answer

I think it's all to do with the demographic. Many coders see DB as a kids product, because of the way it is marketed etc... whilst BB is seen as a more serious choice for hobbyist coders. Whether or not this is true doesn't matter, but, most DB coders are kids - kids who don't know enough about coding (yet) or do not have enough time / determination to finish projects. I think that is why we only see a few decent, finished games, come out - and these are (mostly) from older users such as Jeku, Tifu, GeeCee, VanB, Skwirle (older?) etc...

On the other side though, can you name any good blitz creations? Projects to match our Jazz Jackrabbit, Katey's Quest, Lonewolf, Wordtris, Mercanaries 2, Miss Kitty Fantastico or any of GeeCee's games? If you ask me - Blitz games smell way too Windows 95 - just look at that gay blitz game, Stan the Binman (or whatever) for proof. GAY ALERT! >> http://download.software.co.uk/gs/html/gs/f4/en/products.jsp?sfid=32875&pubid=3649 << AND THIS IS THERE BEST CREATION, TOO.

I think DB is getting more recognised, but it's still the "kids" option out of the two - (Perhaps because of the way DBC was marketed as a kind of easy, kids product with a brightly coloured box? etc...) - at least, in the 'public' eye. Because of this, any really talented dev teams choose Blitz.

Thoughts?

Its not the tool, its the workman that counts most of all. You can only get out of DBP whatever you put in.

Yeah, I kind of missed that point out - but we don't get all of the good workmen we should because they move to Blitz.

I'm probably wrong, any other thoughts?

At the end of the day, does it matter if it can?

Mnemonix is absolutely right. Now lets lock this thread as we've had this debate about a gazillion times already.

lol I know this question have been asked ALOT of times now. But i just wanted to know Well... Maybe it's just because the blitzBasic community have more users

But i've heard that blitz3D is rarely updated and is stucked on directx 7.0.

Is that true? Also i think that maybe blitz3D had a better marketing.

Nerd, it's not that we don't want to talk about it. It's that this topic has now been banned from the forums after it always leading the inevitable flamewars.

Personally the way I see it, as it stands; yes Blitz3D is more established and more stable.

Nickelodeon and recently Disney game developers have been using it more and more for thier downloadable game projects. Though in the same breath from my standpoint it's a much more difficult product to use as a whole.

The problem like with Pure Basic stems from the fact that it's adding quite alot of user-end power, without designing a way for it to be easier.

This is the main reason I've stuck with DarkBASIC Professional over the years. While sure I gripe almost weekly about bugs, and 'features'.. fact is that it is the only BASIC on the market that I can enjoy using for periods longer than 5minutes.

The language design itself makes it enjoyable and feel easier, as well as more simplistic. Though there are more times than I'd care to admit where Blitz/Pure/Turbo Basic have seemed much better featurewise and stability wise (and speed wise!) the fact is that I find it much easier to write:

than I do

I know this is between DB/P and B3D, but I can't remember how to do that in Blitz right now.

Alot of people also use Blitz because it has alot lower system requirements. I'll bet everyone have directx 7 or better even if they don't update their computers. With DBP if you don't have the absolute latest directx, drivers, and hardware ... it will not run properly. It is kinda pointless to require directx 9.0c for a text adventure game or 2d puzzle game Even still I prefer DBP because of ease of use. I bought DBC for my lower system requirement software.

I won a cd version of that binman game in last year's retro remakes compo - maybe I'll load it up and see how 'gay' it is.

I think part of the problem is this site doesn't do much to promote games the community has made.
A infrequently updated and hard to navigate showcase and a program announcements board with no way to tell which of the hundreds of posts contain good games.
A lot of the good games just get forgotten a few months after release unless the author is a forum regular and keeps promoting their game.

Personally, I just cannot stand the art-style, that's all. It's a nice enough game, but the art-style, really, really annoys me.

Worth a go - you might like it, I dunno.

That's not it at all ...
1 - these threads always degenerate into flames
2 - these forums are not here to advertise competing products

They each have their pro's and con's. Don't just be a fan-boy - Pick the best tool for the job.

Download the demo and have a go with it. I own and use both Blitz and DarkBASIC.
