Well I don't know the first thing about laptop computers but now I need one. My budget is $1000. I need to know the best I can get for that. What it will be used for is simple stuff mostly, word processing, web surfing, graphics editing, programming, etc... It will rarely if ever be used for any of the new high power games. It will have lots of high size files and programs on it though. Can you please give me some suggestions?

Don't look at me like that!

I got a FUJITSU SIEMENS Amilo something anyway it has an AMD 64 3400+ processor. I use it fine for running programs like Maya so you should have no problems for what you want to use it for and it cost me just under £800 so quite cheap considering the alternatives

Well I absolutely cannot spend anything over $1000, so that seems to be too much right now.

IBM and Toshiba make nice laptops. Their latest models have great screens on them. I'm buying a laptop later this week, but at $2300 (student price) I don't think you'd be interested. I'm getting a 17" G4 powerbook. You should actually give Ebay a try. I been looking on there at laptop for the past week or so. I've come across some really good deals, but I didn't get them cause I decided on an Apple.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

heh...compaq are good. I dont see why people hit on them. They usually have 3 hr battery life when they say 2hr.. It is quite funny. (my experience with 2 boughten, and 1 office one)

I got a Dell. People slag them off, but it's normally just anti-fanboys. eg. some people praise NVidia or MS through the roof no matter what, and some people are totally the opposite. Personally, if it works well, then fine. Also the resolution was tops (1920x1200) and at the time the spec was very very good (Doom 3 plays fine, is not one of those huge efforts, and has proper battery life at around 4 hours). I loved my old HP, but this thing knocks it's socks off in every department. Apart from connectivety.

At the time I looked at Alienware *coughmassiveripoffcough* quite seriously, but honestly couldn't rate them any higher than a RockDirect Extreme (one of quite a few who used the same chassis at the time), which was cheaper (£200) and faster (Alienware had slower memory, and slower benchmarks). Got to love the alien eyes in the BIOS though Preferred Voodoo though.

I looked a hell of a lot into laptops at the time (about a year ago or so), and the most useful site was http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/Forums/Default.aspx Great site. There was also a site I cannot remember, but it was mainly fanboy type stuff.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

My sister has a Compaq Laptop aswell...

When she first got it it ran amazingly fast...

But now she's starting to download unnecessary programs and fill up the HDD with a bunch of games.. (and god knows what else) and I can really notice it going a lot slower...

Peace
