Stole this link off slashdot:

http://nn.cs.utexas.edu/NERO/index.php

Also stole this quote from there:

Quote: ""In an unusual demonstration of video game innovation with limited funding and resources, a mostly volunteer team of over 30 student programmers, artists, and researchers at the University of Texas at Austin has produced a new game genre in which the player interacively trains robotic soldiers for combat. Unlike most games today that use scripting for the AI, non-player-characters in NERO learn new tactics in real-time using advanced machine learning techniques. Perhaps projects such as this one will encourage the video game industry to begin to seek alternatives to simple scripted AI.""

I'd wager that they used FEAR as the base, which just for point of interest was created almost 8years ago for Quake2. On it's own, it's pretty weak but thats due to processing power; recent you've been able to do much more with it.

It's not a case of can't do learning AI, more a point.. is the time worth it? Half-Life 2 for example has very little left over for the AI, which I believe makes it suffer and quite similar to the original. Yet the Dynamics Scripts allow it to interact and take random courses of action, with the random factor based on that enemies settings.

Typical Slashdot, always a few years behind; or spouting rumour.
