In Dark Basic, are the backgrounds used in game, just a bitmap, or a 3d half sphere that is textured?

yep thats right! most people use bitmaps for 2D games and either sky spheres or boxes for 3D games although it's your choice

For 2d:

Some use a bitmap, or something called a sprite.

For 3d:

Most use Skyspheres or Skyboxes.

You ever thought of doing backgrounds like unreal tournament. A seperate room with a box or some shape textured to look like sky, I had an idea of how to do it.
If you create this seperate room miles from your level. and its textured and stuff, make sure BACKDROP is OFF and basically before every sync have the camera filick to the position and then your players position always looking at the camera angle (DONT TOUCH THE ANGLE OR ELSE IT WUDN'T LOOK RIGHT) then sync, it would give the look off a proper 3d background, thus meaning the player could neva reach it. Oh corse if you player was standing in a completley boxed room they wouldnt beable to see the background. Has ne one eva had that idea?

sponge, it's simple (and your idea is crazy and stupid).

You get a skybox or skysphere from somewhere (a big hollow box or sphere), make the appropriate textures, texture it, make it really big so that your char is inside it, and you're done. You are inside the box with a sky that seamlessly textures along the walls.

Load object "myskysphere",1
Load image "myskytexture",1

Position object 1,x,y,z
Texture object 1,1

Set object blah blah blah (read the manual)
