I'm just telling you about this new place I made called 24 hour games...

What I want to do is help those of us who can't seem to ever finish a game, get on the right track. Here you get your own board that you get to moderate, where you can post your creations. The catch? You have to finish each game within 24 hours.

We will hold monthly contests on weekends where we all try to make a game within the same 24 hours, and I will judge out of those which is the best.

I don't know how many of you have tried this, but I know for a fact, 24 hour game making CAN BE FUN! It's very challenging, and, believe it or not, can create some very good games. So come see what it's all about, and try to make a game in 24 hours. I dare ya!

Here's the link: http://s2.phpbbforfree.com/forums/24hourgames.html

The first game making competition will be this Saturday and Sunday, starting at 12:00 Midnight EST on Saturday night, ending 12:00 Midnight EST on Sunday night.

Hope to see you there!

Not at the moment, as we're not big enough to merit companies donating prizes, and I'm too poor to give any prizes.

Unless you count a link to your game and website on the announcements forum/front page a prize

you should make a full-blown site for this, rather than just a message board. Sounds like an awesome idea. I might be able to purchase a domain for it soon, and if you ask jimmy, he could probably provide hosting. This could be come an awesome idea.

Sounds fun when it would be good for when I'm not making a big project like game, just go and spew stupidness into a game for 24 hours, eventually I'll get inspired(that was a complement, btw).

It's amazing how much TV has raised us. (Bart Simpson)

Leys> I didn't really think people would like it, so I thought I'd keep it simple and small.

Manticore> Thanks

Mouse> Yes... Well, no. But we can pretend!

Oneka> Eh, it's a risk I'm willing to take.

I wouldn't donate an entire day, no sleep to making a game for no prize, would you?

Good idea, but you would really need incentives for people to do it, and be careful about people complaining if they die from overuse of computers etc...

maybe a 48 hr one? and incentive..maybe free something...hmmm., Like maybe a vote and the winner gets free domain, with hosting for 2 yrs?
second prize? Maybe if some pro modellers come, or want to help out, free modelling for a game by a very good modeller?
and third...domain no hosting?

I can provide 1st place.
This would have to be Monthly

Awesome idea I do say it should be 72 hour... not all of us are equipped/want to/are allowed to spend the entire day sitting at the keyboard, drinking red bull, and eating leftover pizza.

Jr Noober, thanks for the offer! If you're really serious about helping me out on this, then that'd be awesome. I think the free domain with hosting for 2 years would be very good incentive for people to sign up.

Hmm... Maybe we should do 48 hours, or 72. I could run it over a weekend say... Friday(at midnight)-Sunday(at midnight)...

I wanted to ask: I am thinking of signing up, but I am not a good programmer besides when I plan for weeks/months, could I make any type of game?

Yes, you can make any type of game, and you can plan in advance before you actually start making the game

... Then how do you know it was made in only 24hrs?

I would have thought that the system should run something like;

You have a counter on the website saying how long untill the next compo starts.
When that counter hits 0, it's replaced by a big banner that states the genre the game has to be, and the basic rules for this round.
The game has to be submitted within that 24/48/72 hours, and if it's not, then it's not accepted.

That way, noone can cheat by making the game before-hand

Jess.

ah, very basic php too. I can imagine it being easy to do, and makes a lot of sense.
