I written a small application to convert bumpmaps in to normal maps. The Application is written with c#, so if you are running on Win2k, you might have to download the .net common libraries from microsoft. Let me know if you find bugs or if you find it usefull.

I feel really stupid asking this but what is a normal map? Whatever one is the program works nicely!

Andrew,

Have a look at
Number8-BlendModes.dbpro in the u58_examples.zip, which show the fixed and new features of release 5.8.

Normal maps give an object, the illusion of bumps or 3d texture.

Look at these post as well

Hope this clears up some of your questions

So DOT3 and BumpMapping are 2 ways of doing the same thing? If so is DOT3 faster?

I believe DOT3 is a lot faster, but bump-mapping (if done right) can be more efficient with memory, since it only needs an 8bit texture, while DOT3 needs 24bit. Although this isn't really an issue since your average gfx card has 128mb of ram or more these days. Although I have heard talk that DOT3 produces better results.

I don't suffer from insanity - I enjoy every minute of it!

Hee yeah normal maps and parralax maps (same thing maybe?), are what gives doom3 its realism and detail. Im sure a lot of other games have them too but that one just stands out for it.

2. convert your texture image to a Greyscale of original
3. Added DUDV mapping
4. Added emboss texturing

Normal mapping is a map that helps to add realism to your models; Essentially, it is a map of how light reflects off a high-poly model that can be applied to a low-poly model to make it look like the higher-poly model. G-Man at the start of the Hl2 Single-player game is a good example of this being put to use.
